Drs. Hellwig, Bowen, and Running
Politically, I chose the path to become president
of the St. Joseph's Hospital Dental Clinic and president of the medical staff at Children's Rehabilitative Services, of which I was on the craniofacial
cleft palate team starting in 1966. I was also the
president of the Central Arizona Dental Society. I
was initiated into the Fellowship of the American
College of Dentists and the International College
of Dentists.
Both Todd and I retired from our active orthodontic practice in 2011. We transitioned our orthodontic practice to one of my residents, Michael
Bowen, from the second class at the Arizona
School of Dentistry & Oral Health Postgraduate
Orthodontic Program (ASDOH-POP). I then went
on to join the inaugural postgraduate faculty
at A.T. Still University, ASDOH-POP, where the
chair of the department is the illustrious Dr. Jae
Hyun Park. I have taught there for 15 years and
thoroughly enjoy the bright and enthusiastic
residents in their 30-month program. Every other
week, I take five residents from each class to
perform orthodontic treatment at the inner-city
St. Vincent de Paul Dental Clinic. It is the mission
of the school to "serve the underserved."

great-grandkids. It is truly a blessing to know
that all proceed with progress. None of the kids
followed in the health care profession. They chose
to pursue their own paths and are happy doing
so, even if I wished they had pursued one of the
health professions.
JP: In your early practice years, were there any
mentors who helped you get going?
CR: Arizona has a very active study club that just
celebrated its 75th year. All orthodontists are
welcome to attend. Its admission is based on the
same requirement as the ABO. It is a very collaborative group working together to always improve

JP: Tell me about your family.
CR: I am most proud of my four adult children,
two boys and two girls, whom I constantly find
amazing. I have been gifted with nine grand-
