Barack Obama's record on
protecting wildlife is already
impressive - he's forged
partnerships with Kenya and
Gabon to stop illegal wildlife
trading, banned the sale of
ivory in the US and worked to
make the American fishing
industry more sustainable.
Now the outgoing US
president has quadrupled an
area of marine conservation
in Hawaii to a whopping
582,578 square miles, making
it the world's largest marine
conservation area, at twice
the size of Texas.
Hawaiian senator, Brian
Schatz, called it 'one of the
most important actions a
president has ever taken for
the health of the oceans.'
When Ariana Miyamoto won
Miss Universe Japan last year,
the half-Japanese, halfAfrican American woman was
subjected to racist abuse
online, with some people
complaining the title
should have gone to a 'pure'
Japanese woman.
The backlash didn't stop
this year's Miss World Japan
winner, though. Priyanka
Yoshikawa, who has Indian
and Japanese heritage, is,
impressively, an elephant
trainer and kickboxer, and
said Ariana inspired her to fly
the flag for other mixed-race
Japanese women.
When she won the title,
she wasn't subjected to such
a strong backlash, hopefully
demonstrating that attitudes
are moving forward.

The charity Rethink Mental
Illness is running a series of
free Mental Health First Aid
training courses to help more
people recognise the signs
of mental health in others,
and teach them how to
respond appropriately.
The Vauxhall-based charity
offers the workshops to
anyone who lives, works,
studies or volunteers in the
Camden or Islington areas
and ITN is one of the first
employers to sign up.
Rethink Mental Illness
says there is widespread
misconceptions about mental
illness. The intention is to
raise awareness throughout
communities, as mental health
crises, such as suicide and
self-harming, can often be
avoided by early intervention.

BIRD HOSPITAL
Migratory birds passing over
Israel on their way to Africa
from their Arctic breeding
grounds can stop off for some
specialised care at the world's
first avian blood bank. The
Israeli Wildlife Hospital has
opened the blood bank to
help birds who pass through
the country - a major stop-off
point for migratory birds.
Dr Elad Smit, who works at
the hospital, explains that
many of the birds they treat
have low levels of blood
protein after their long flights
and how the veterinary team
is collecting blood plasma
from a variety of species in
order to treat different kinds
of migratory birds.
