BREXIT: HOW DOES IT WORK,
AND WHERE ARE WE NOW?
Used as a shorthand way of saying that the UK is leaving the EU merging the words Britain and exit - the Brexit is the result of a
referendum held in the United Kingdom on Thursday 23 June 2016, to
decide whether the country should leave or remain in the European
Union. Leave won by 51.9% to 48.1%, with a turnout of 71.8%. Prime
Minister Theresa May triggered the exit process on 29 March 2017
and in accordance with Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the two sides
have two years to agree on the terms of the split. However, the
conservative leader has been struggling to find a compromise divorce
deal that is acceptable to both the EU and her own Members of
Parliament, who could block the final accord in the House of Commons. If a legal treaty is not in place and ratified by March 29, 2019,
this could result in Britain crashing out of Europe in a no deal Brexit
with serious economic and legal consequences. While EU negotiator
Michel Barnier stated mi-October that the Brexit treaty was
"90 percent ready", some antagonism remained on crucial issues, the
most contentious one being how to keep Britain's border with Ireland
open after Brexit. Regarding immigration, one of the key issues in the
Brexit campaign, Theresa May has declared that the preference will
be for high-skilled immigrants, putting the three million EU citizens
currently living in Britain in a potentially insecure position after the
end of the transition period in December 2020. The ones who have
been in the country for more than five years have the possibility to
apply for permanent residency, or for a British passport.

❱❱❱ A FAVOURABLE ENVIRONMENT

FOR ENTREPRENEURS ...
BUT LOOSING ATTRACTIVENESS
When she set up her company four years ago, after
working for big advertising agencies, Anne-Laure
Pingréoun was attracted by the UK's pragmatic
approach to business: "I launched my enterprise in
one week! I didn't need any initial funds to register
my trademark and as soon as I started I already
had projects underway", she recalls. Moreover, as
she works as a curator between brands and
designers, the city felt like a huge talent pool right
at the centre of Europe: "There are many artists
and designers from all over the world who meet
here to achieve things that are harder to do in their
own countries, it is the New York of Europe", she
affirms. However, since the Brexit vote her projects
in the UK have been cancelled or postponed, making her reconsider being based in London: "When
I started, 80% of my clients were in the UK, including Unilever and British magazines; now 90% of
them are abroad, and the situation is the same for
several of my colleagues. Brands here have been
cautious, waiting to see how the situation evolves",
she explains. In case of a hard Brexit, she might
contemplate moving back to the US where she
lived between 2009 and 2014 and where most of
her clients are now, even if the financial requirements for setting up her business there would be
much higher than in the UK.
CROSSBORDER BUSINESS AFFECTED
BY UNCERTAINTY AND THE VOLATILITY
OF THE POUND
The affairs of Jean-Philippe Verdier, founder of the
NEOMA London alumni Club in early 2000, and a
twenty year investment banker in London with
several international banks now turned entrepreneur with his corporate finance advisory company
Verdier & Co., have also been impacted by the
Brexit vote. If the British economy has proven resilient so far, with growth and consumer spending
holding better than expected following the Brexit
vote, uncertainty and the direction of the pound
have affected crossborder business: "Acquisitions
by French corporate clients that were supposed to
take place last summer were put on hold or simply
cancelled", he adds. A situation that has forced him
to further diversify his activities on UK based clients, and also in France itself, where he is considering opening an office. For now, he is preparing to
apply for British citizenship, to continue enjoying
the British lifestyle. "I have been here for two decades, I enjoy it and my Franco-Anglo-Norwegian
family too. London doesn't have the charm of Paris,
but it is a very social city with lots of parks and a
nice and positive atmosphere", he says.
