THE BANKING SECTOR, ONE OF THE MOST
CONCERNED BY THE BREXIT
In the banking sector, sales and trading are particularly concerned, as the City is going to lose the
European financial passport, which allowed
non-European banks to operate transactions in
euro from London. Baptiste Favrot (PGE 17), who
came to London to work on the London trading
floor of a European investment bank as an international volunteer (VIE), is already considering
moving to Paris or Frankfurt after having lived only
one year in the UK. The reason? His bank has
made the decision to relocate his branch to Frankfurt by March 2019: "I mainly work with European
clients and without the passport it makes no sense
to remain in the UK", he explains, adding that "The
overall climate is heavy as very few concrete
announcements are being made, which forces
people to take their destinies into their hands".
He is not the only one moving back. The latest
2018 figures from the Office for National Statistics
(ONS) show that the United Kingdom is losing
attractivity among European citizens. Net migration to the UK from other EU countries reached a
near six-year low this year, a shift driven by both a
decline in EU arrivals and an increase in EU citizens emigrating: "It has become much easier to
find a spot in a French school than before, and
rents have started to get down in some areas",
Anaïs Bernier testifies. In the finance sector, the
European Banking Authority (EBA) announced its
relocation to Paris, and several American banks,
Wells Fargo being the latest one, have said they
will transfer some activities to Paris. In addition,
BNP Paribas, Société Générale and HSBC have
chosen the French capital as the headquarters for

their European activities, along with BlackRock,
one of the biggest asset managers in the world.
"ESMA, the European regulator, has given instructions, stating that from now on all analysts covering European assets should be based in Europe.
Some of my colleagues have already been sent
back", complements Amadou Loum (PGE 11),
Director in a European rating agency.
PARIS, THE NEW CITY?
In this context, are Paris or Frankfurt in line to
replace London as the new financial centre of
Europe? "Paris could become a new trading hub
competing with London while Frankfurt would
develop as an alternative for transactions", Nathalie Janson predicts. Still, out of the 320,000 people working in London in the banking, insurance
and asset management sectors, only a few thousand relocations have been announced, 3,500 in
Frankfurt and 4,500 in Paris, and actual departures
have only concerned a few hundred people so far
as French daily Le Monde pointed out mid-October. And despite the day of the Brexit approaching,
the London currency market, the first in the world,
is still popular amongst financial investors, hedge
funds and mutual funds. According to a study from
Reuters, over the last two years, London has even
increased its domination over the foreign exchange
market (+23 %), before New York, Singapore, Hong
Kong and Tokyo. "The City is the 4th financial centre in the world and it possesses a very efficient

The British way of life - as well as the pro-business
environment - was also what drew Zakaria Omar
(PGE 14) to London in 2013, even before he completed his degree at NEOMA: "I like London, it is a
very multicultural city and I appreciate the simplified and rationalised administration which allows
me to focus my energy on my company and my
family", shares the young entrepreneur, who set up
two companies he is now managing from France,
where he moved back in 2016 for family reasons. If
his first business, a mobile application to help real
estate agents make autonomous videos of properties, is not concerned by the Brexit, his second one,
designed for French customers who wish to purchase and import cars from the UK, would be hurt
in case of a hard Brexit: "Our consumers are quite
concerned but in the worst case scenario customs'
duty would be around 10%, similar to the ones
between Switzerland and Europe, so it is not so
bad", he nuances.
