"We are confident we offer the products
and services a borrower would find at a
national bank either directly, or in a few
cases, through alliances and participations,"
he comments.
In all of its businesses, Cardoni says
F&M looks for clients that are a good fit.
"We try to find opportunities where we
can be an important bank relationship to
the client and meet its needs," he says.
"If we can't, we tell the borrower quickly
and try to help find a bank that can."
Kitchens advises producers to seek a
good fit as well. "When you are deciding
who to partner with, look beyond the
interest rates and financial covenants on
the term sheet," she urges. "Think about
your company's size and your objectives
for the next three to five years, then pick a
bank that not only has the resources and
skill sets to meet your needs, but that also
will consider you a significant client. If
you do that, the bank will have the time
and knowledge to give you great service."
Midstream Equity
The high oil prices and exploration
and production activity that have helped
make reserve-based lending appealing to
banks also have created opportunities in
the midstream sector. "As drilling has
shifted from conventional plays to unconventional plays, the infrastructure in
many areas is no longer adequate to
handle the rapid development of new reserves," observes Dennis F. Jaggi, one of
three managing partners at San Antoniobased private equity firm EnCap Flatrock
Midstream. "That has created demand
for new infrastructure capable of handling
higher volumes and pressures."
Jaggi says this situation presents a
vast investment opportunity. "For every
dollar spent on upstream activities, such
as drilling and completing wells, 15-35
cents will need to be spent building the
necessary gathering, processing and treating infrastructure," he predicts.
