Wood Group Positions Engineering For Growth
HOUSTON-Wood Group reports that
it is focusing on growing its engineering,
production facilities support, and gas turbine business services following the acquisition of PSN and disposing its well
support division.
To facilitate engineering growth, the
company says its engineering division is
being restructured into two market-facing
groups: subsea/pipeline/riser and integrity
management, and process and facilities.
The subsea-related group, led by Steve
Wayman, was formed in 2010 and operates
under a Wood Group Kenny banner, the
company says. The new process and facilities group will operate under a Wood
Group Mustang banner and comprise Alliance Engineering, Energeticos, IMV

GDS Introduces Top Drive That Delivers High Torque
HOUSTON-Global Drilling Support
says it has designed and built an 850ton top drive that delivers high torque,
reliability and sustainability.
The GDM 850 incorporates a robust
mechanical design that minimizes failure
points while providing outstanding
torque and high revolutions per minute,
GDS says. The company adds that the
850 provides easier access to maintenance areas and promotes maintenance
personnel's safety by including built-in
work platforms.
According to GDS, the GDM 850's
key features include:
* A proven GE motor with a unique,
self-aligning coupling system that extends motor life;
* A solid drive pinion, which is
supported from the top and the bottom
for increased reliability;
* A robust helical gear assembly that
contributes to the 850's high torque capabilities, long life and quiet operation;
* Forced-spray lubrication to ensure
consistent lubrication of all key parts;
and
* Submerged thrust bearings that
extend the top drive's operational life
two- or threefold.
The GDM 850 operates at 1,570 continuous horsepower and delivers 64,000
foot pounds of continuous torque at 0116 rpm to a maximum 250 rpm and
88,000 pounds of intermittent torque,
GDS reports. Static brake capacity is

rated at 60,000 pounds, while pipe handling capacity is 110,000 foot pounds.
The 850 delivers 7,500 psi mud flow
through a four-inch passage, the company
concludes.
