increase. These projections come from a new report by IHS
Global Insight that was commissioned by ANGA. With U.S.
energy demand expected to double from 2000 levels by 2035,
shale gas will provide an abundant, affordable and cleaner-burning domestic energy resource to meet more of our transportation and power generation needs.
In addition to the 1.6 million people we expect will have jobs
in 2035 thanks to shale gas production, the National Association of Manufacturers says 1 million more industrial jobs can
be attributed to the country's abundant and affordable shale resources. The cumulative effect on U.S. gross domestic product
from shale gas development is close to $1.9 trillion. And this
is not simply a localized windfall. Natural gas is being produced
in 30 states today, and is creating jobs and revenues in all 50
states. In my view, one really cannot underestimate what a gamechanging resource this is.

Q:

New supplies translate to new market opportunities. Is
natural gas expected to see expanded market share in the
years ahead in traditional sectors such as industrial, commercial
and residential? Electric generation has accounted for 2.2 Tcf
a year in consumption growth over the past decade, going from
5.2 Tcf in 2000 to 7.4 Tcf in 2010 (a 42 percent increase). Will
this level of demand growth continue going forward? What is
driving expanded natural gas usage in power generation?

The IHS Global Insight study reveals that by 2035, shale gas
will account for 60 percent of all U.S. natural gas production,
up from 34 percent today. That projection, paired with the environmental advantages of natural gas in power generation,
makes this resource a popular choice for power plants, particularly as they face new regulatory demands.
The same is true for U.S. transportation and industrial needs.
Total gas consumption is projected to increase at a rate of 1.6
percent annually. By 2035, total gas consumption in the United States and Canada is projected to approach 110 Bcf/d.
EIA projects that industrial energy demand will increase at
an average rate of 0.9 percent a year to 2035. This may seem
like a low level of growth, but it represents energy requirements
for both energy-intensive manufacturing industries (which are
expected to decline) and nonenergy-intensive manufacturing
industries (which are expected to grow).
The primary force shaping natural gas demand in the industrial sector is the movement away from these energy-intensive
manufacturing processes. There are two forces driving this shift:
the increased energy efficiency of equipment and processes
used in the industrial sector, and a shift to manufacturing goods
that require less energy input. This trend is expected to hold
into the future, and is the reason for modest increases in energy demand for the industrial sector.
However, we are working closely with the industrial sector.
We know industrial users are pleased with the long-term stability and affordability of the natural gas industry's product.
And, from the steel industry to the chemical industry, there is a
big story under way that more jobs will be created and more

value-adding work will be done here in the United States instead of overseas, thanks to the abundant supplies of domestic
natural gas.
As for electric generation, there are two primary forces at
work that serve to increase demand. The increased demand for
electricity in general, combined with the retirement of older
generation plants, is leaving a significant requirement for electric generation that will be filled by natural gas. In order to meet
growing U.S. demand for electricity, the Energy Information
Administration predicts 223 gigawatts of new electric generation capacity will be needed by 2035.
An average new plant produces 1 gigawatt or a little less.
Because of the relatively low capital requirements for building
natural gas-fired, combined-cycle generation plants, as well as
emissions reductions that can be gained by using natural gas as
opposed to other fossil fuels, a growing share of new electric
generating capacity will be natural gas combined-cycle or combustion turbine generation.

Q:

ANGA is a strong advocate of using natural gas to power
the nation's transportation grid. How is natural gas
making inroads in the U.S. transportation sector, and what is the
size of the long-term market opportunity? The economic and
environmental benefits associated with converting gasoline and
diesel-powered vehicles to natural gas are compelling, but what
are the biggest obstacles to creating a transportation market in
which natural gas is the "fuel of choice?" To what degree are
those obstacles related to logistical considerations such as
fueling infrastructure and NGV engine technology?
I feel strongly, both individually and as chairman of ANGA,
that the U.S. natural gas industry can and will have a huge impact on reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy.
Natural gas as a transportation fuel is making significant
progress. Not only does it burn 25 percent cleaner than gasoline, but the price is stable and inexpensive, averaging $2.06
per gallon equivalent. These benefits will become harder to ignore in coming years, and I know ANGA gets phone calls and
e-mails daily from consumers asking how they can convert their
vehicles.
At Apache Corp., we have offered to reimburse employees
for 50 percent of their NGV conversion costs. It has proven to
be a popular program. We also have seven NGV fueling stations open and nine more in the works, of which five will be
available to the public. Other companies are doing the same,
and we are working together on regional and other initiatives
to get the infrastructure in place to help more folks make the
switch to natural gas.
Municipalities and private companies around the country
truly have led this movement. They already have begun buying
natural gas vehicles and building fueling stations to support
these vehicles, and I believe this is where the most meaningful
change can be made right away. Ryder Systems Inc., United
Parcel Service of America, AT&T and Verizon are among the
major U.S. companies seeing huge savings for their own cor-
