Geological Topics Highlight IOGA NY
HAMBURG, N.Y.-Groundbreaking
research and other geological topics are
two of the many technical highlights of
the Independent Oil & Gas Association
of New York's summer meeting, announces Executive Director Brad Gill.
The gathering is set for July 16-17 at
the Peek'n Peak Resort in Clymer, N.Y.
"Our technical program on Wednesday,
July 16, will address many of the big
issues facing our industry," Gill remarks.
"We are especially excited about two
great geological talks that will prove to
be very informative."
One of those will focus on up-to-theminute research on microseismic tomography for fracture mapping, Gill explains.
The speaker is Terry Engelder, professor
of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University, who will discuss "groundbreaking
research that has never been shared with
the industry," Gill reports.
In addition, David Bajek will speak
about the geology of black shales, focusing
on a historical perspective of the Appalachian

Basin. Bajek is project geologist for core
shale development east at Chevron North
America Exploration and Production.
Equally exciting, Gill proposes, is a
social event planned Wednesday evening
"for whom we expect will be New York's
next governor: Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino."
Gill says IOGA NY is holding a cocktail
reception for Astorino, preceding the regularly scheduled reception. "If we want
our industry in New York to thrive, rather
than just barely survive, we must do everything in our power to help defeat Governor
Andrew Cuomo this year," he declares.
Earlier in the day, Gill goes on, "New
York operators also will learn from industry
experts about the New York Public Service
Commission's latest enforcement initiatives
in the state, as well as the impacts of
Pennsylvania's Chapter 78 regulations on
many of our members that operate in
both states. These two talks are critical to
our members because they impact both
conventional and unconventional operators.

Those regulations undoubtedly will result
in increased compliance efforts and costs."
The technical seminar also includes
panel discussions of gas pipeline infrastructure, and operational challenges related to sourcing, transporting and disposing of water.
"And, we will have an excellent presentation on the legal considerations associated with leasing and protecting operators' rights under a lease, along with
the importance of bullet-proof lease language," Gill comments. "These issues
are all very important because they cross
state borders and impact oil and gas companies in various Northeast states."

IOGA NY's technical session begins
at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday with a discussion
of hydraulic fracturing with natural gas,

Seminar Gathers Mid-Continent Gurus
HAYS, KS.-Kansas Next Step's seventh
annual oil and gas seminar, to be held
Aug. 5-7 at the Robbins Center and the
Sternberg Museum of Natural History at
Fort Hays State University, will kick off
with a six-hour short course given by Gary
Stewart and Ed Rose on interpreting old
well logs, particularly conventional electric
logs from before 1960. Alternatively, attendees can participate in a field trip led
by Jerry Green to outcroppings in Grove
County, Ks., where they will hunt for
fossils from the Late Cretaceous period.
On Aug. 6 and 7, experts will speak
about other topics of interest to oil and
gas producers, KNS says. Among the
presentations, Kristie Ferguson of KLF
Consulting will discuss the Mid-Continent's rapid transition from conventional
to unconventional wells, providing an
overview of the science and technology
behind the activity and its impact. In another session, KNS continues, Jeff Miller
of Oak Springs Energy will outline an
integrated workflow for mitigating risk
and maximizing value in unconventional
reservoirs.
Other seminar speakers will focus on
exploration techniques. According to the
KNS, these include:
* David Koger of Koger Remote
Sensing will explain how satellite data
and photogeology can accelerate explo-

ration cycles and reduce costs.
* David Limmer and Liam Clark, international speakers from Edinburgh,
Scotland, of the Adrok Group, will discuss
a novel technology for surveying, detecting
and monitoring compositional changes
within the subsurface.
* Hendratta Ali of Fort Hays' geosciences department will show how modern exploration techniques such as magnetic susceptibility and attribute analysis
can help operators exploit mature fields
cost effectively in Kansas.
Kevin Bailey of GeoCertified will
highlight the advantages of using gas detectors and chromatograms during drilling,
KNS says.
The organization adds that several presenters will focus on completion techniques, including:
* Tito Abiseid, from Weatherford,
will outline the best ways to deploy equipment, acquire data, and interpret that data
when fracturing horizontal wells.
* Charlie Smith, with Halliburton,
will explain how operators can use magnetic resonance solutions and dipole sonic
logs to develop more efficient completions
targeting the Mississippian.
* Kyle Taylor, with Earthborn Clean,
will detail an alternative to hydrochloric
acid-based acidizing that is safe, environmentally friendly and noncorrosive,

and provides much greater permeability
in carbonate limestone formations.
Two presentations will focus on secondary and tertiary recovery, KNS reports.
Randy Prater and Daniel French of Polymer Services LLC will demonstrate how
improved oil recovery treatments can
provide a great return on investment, and
Lynn Watney of the Kansas Geological
Survey will discuss whether Kansas is at
last in a position to implement carbon
dioxide-based enhanced oil recovery.
KNS says, Craig Pangburn of Underground Cavern Stabilization LLC will
share the company's experiences placing
exploration, drilling and production material in underground salt caverns to enhance their long-term stability.
New to this year's seminar is a grill
and brew barbecue on Tuesday, Aug. 5,
for all the speakers, sponsors and registrants. KNS describes the event as a
great opportunity to network and catch
up with industry associates.
KNS notes it is a 501(c) nonprofit.
The organization says it will use proceeds
from the seminar to connect students and
teachers with unique and exciting educational opportunities.
