CNG vehicle market by its new owners
at Fiat, who have extensive experience
serving the needs of the large Italian
market for NGVs. Additionally, licensed
converters operate in most states.

The marketplace is seeing a combination of new fleet-owned and retail compressed natural gas fueling stations that are open to the public. The United States is adding CNG
stations at a pace not seen since the 1990s.

Fleets Lead Way
Auto manufacturers' decisions to take
a more positive stand in the NGV market
can be attributed to several factors. The
market has been jump-started, to a large
extent, by the actions of fleet owners
placing sizable orders. This finally has
encouraged fuel suppliers to build a
rapidly growing network of stations open
to the public, echoing the goal of federal
lawmakers going back to the Energy
Policy Act of 1992.
The most notable example has been
ATT's announcement in 2009 that it
would purchase 8,000 CNG-fueled vans
(e.g., Ford 250s) and related vehicles
over five years. Other companies, such
as Verizon (500 CNG vans in 2010) and
a number of oil and gas companies, also
have placed vehicle orders in the hundreds.
There aren't yet enough vehicle options
to generate widespread, mainstream con-
