Environmental Groups
Find Profits In Lawsuits,
Texas Alliance Asserts
WICHITA FALLS, TX.-
Environmental activist groups have
played a major role in the political
world because of their ability to raise
large sums of money, a study
commissioned by the Texas Alliance of
Energy Producers says. Those funds
then help elect anti-development
policymakers at the national, state and
local levels, the association asserts.
Nine national environmental groups
raised more than $500 million in 2012,
and have $978 million in net assets,
according to the study, which examined
Form 999 federal tax returns.
According to the Alliance, the top
five groups in terms of revenues are:
* National Resource Defense
Council ($123 million in revenues, $56
million in net assets);
* Environmental Defense Fund
($111 million, $173 million);
* Sierra Club ($104 million, $56
million);
* National Audubon Society ($96
million, $385 million); and
* National Wildlife Federation ($65
million, $94 million).
The Alliance quotes media reports
that describe how the environmental
groups obtain part of those funds from
filing and winning lawsuits against
agencies such as the Environmental
Protection Agency. EDF received $2.67
million as a result of just one legal
action, the Alliance notes.
President Obama rarely makes a
political move without consulting
environmental groups, the Alliance
says, adding that many of the nation's
leading environmental activists have
been appointed to key positions by
Obama to his Cabinet and bureaucratic
agencies.
"What they could not get passed as
law, the environmental groups decided
to get passed as regulation," the
Alliance says. "Slowly, the Obama
administration started releasing
regulation after regulation covering
water and air: regulations that
traditionally have been reserved for
state agencies." Ì
