and Poisson's ratio of 0.238.
Examples of the results related to
thickness and TOC are shown in Figures
2A and 2B, respectively. Since the Wolfcamp is 1,400 thick, none the major shale
plays in the database are comparable regarding this parameter. On the other hand,
however, the Wolfcamp's TOC is very
similar to four of the major shale plays:
Horn River, Ohio, Haynesville and Marcellus.
Taking all the results into account,
the system shows that the Wolfcamp
compares favorably to other major oil
shale plays, such as the oil window in
the Barnett and the Bakken. From previous
clustering, a similarity with the Eagle

MOHAMED Y. SOLIMAN is the

George P. Livermore Chair of Petroleum
Engineering at Texas Tech University.
Prior to joining Texas Tech, Soliman
worked for Halliburton Energy for more
than 30 years in technical and managerial
positions. He was also an adjunct production engineering professor at the
University of Houston. A distinguished
member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Soliman holds a B.S. in petroleum
engineering from Cairo University, and
an M.S. and a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from Stanford University.

RICHARD M. BATEMAN is an associate professor in petroleum engineering at Texas Tech, where he teaches
petrophysics and formation evaluation
courses. He began his career as a field
engineer for Schlumberger, and subsequently served in exploration roles at
Amoco (now BP), chief petrophysicist
of Halliburton Logging Services, engineering manager for Bridas (now Pan
American Energy), and regional manager for Gaffney Cline & Associates'
Latin American operations. Bateman
holds an M.A. in natural science-physics
from Oxford University.

This technology identifies and classifies
all major successful shale plays in North
America into clusters, compares the performance of shale plays using key parameters, and then provides suggestions
based on the extensive database. The
evaluation and candidate selection algorithm functions as a guideline for identifying sweet spots, and identifies operationally approved development methods
to increase potential recovery in shale
plays. The outcome of this study has
value for evaluating any shale play and
for future development strategies suggested
by the steps in the algorithm.

GEORGE B. ASQUITH is professor
emeritus from the Pevehouse Chair of
Petroleum Geology and a professor of
geosciences at Texas Tech. He is past
director of the Center for Applied Petrophysical and Reservoir Studies. Asquith
has received the American Association
of Petroleum Geologists' Harrison
Schmitt Award, Presidents Award and
Distinguished Educator Award. He holds
a B.S. in geology from Texas Tech University, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in geology with a minor in geophysics from
the University of Wisconsin.
AHMED ALGARHY is a Ph.D. can-

didate in petroleum engineering at Texas
Tech. He has 10 years of experience in
hydraulic fracturing, wellbore stability,
and shale play evaluation and development. Algarhy has worked for Applied
Science International Company, Advantek International Inc., and Khalda
Petroleum Company (an Apache Corp.
joint venture in in Egypt). He holds a
B.S. in mining engineering, a post-graduate diploma in natural gas engineering,
and an M.S. in drilling geomechanics
from Cairo University.

NEIL STEGENT is technical manager
at Halliburton Energy Services in Houston.
He has worked for Halliburton for more
than 30 years in various roles, including
engineering, customer sales, management
and marketing. Stegent's areas of expertise
include real-time fracture evaluation,
fracture diagnostics, fracture production
evaluation and completion optimization,
with most of his career focused on hydraulic fracture stimulation and completion in low-permeability reservoirs.
Stegent is an engineering graduate of
Texas A&M University.
