reports. "We still have an occasional error
that leads to a late delivery, but overall,
distributors can count on us to get products
to them on time so they can serve their
customers effectively."
Jumbo Bloom Vertical Caster
Shawn Seanor, the executive vice president of energy and distribution for
TimkenSteel, emphasizes that the company
has a long-term commitment to the oil
and gas industry. As part of that commit-
ment, he says the company is expanding
its production capacity.
"When times get busy, the question
once again will become availability," he
says. "It was a struggle at times during
the last upcycle to take care of customers
the way we wanted to, so we are adding
more capacity. We want to make sure
that when the market turns around, our
customers will have access to our products
and services on shorter lead times."
Toward that end, the company has installed the world's largest continuous
jumbo bloom vertical caster and the only
one of its kind in North America, Seanor
relates. The $200 million caster makes
sections of special bar-quality steel that
measure up to 18 by 24 inches, which
can be rolled into bars and seamless
tubes. Seanor says it helped the company
win American Metal Market's 2014
awards for Best Innovation, Process and
Steel Producer of the Year.
"At the most basic level, the caster
enables us to ship another 100,000150,000 tons of product, extra capacity
that will be needed once activity picks
up in applications where we are the sole
supplier," he states.
"With the caster," Seanor continues,
"we can replace ingot-based processes,
which can produce only long-length pipe
at low yields, with custom-cutting, which
can match the length of the steel coming
off the caster to the length the customer
needs in the final product. The flexibility
and efficiency should be good for our
customers."
Seanor says the caster produces clean
steel. "The inclusions in unclean steel
can set a point of failure, so having clean
steel should improve performance in the
