Texas Groups Say Study
On Fracturing Is Distorted
Texas oil and natural gas groups
contend a study critical of local
hydraulic fracturing operations on Texas
state university lands is filled with
misstatements in an attempt to scare the
public about fossil fuel extraction.
Environment Texas and Frontier
Group released the study, Fracking on
University of Texas Lands, in early
September, and several local and
national industry groups-including the
Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, the
Texas Independent Producers & Royalty
Owners Association, and Energy in
Depth-have commented on its findings.
According to an Energy in Depth
breakdown, Environment Texas and
Frontier Group make several points

against fracturing and industry activity
in general, including:
* Fracturing should not occur
anywhere.
* Wells on university lands use
inordinate amounts of water.
* University-owned land and
groundwater have been polluted by
extraction activity.
* Fracturing releases large amounts
of methane that damage the
environment and volatile organic
compounds that can cause health
problems.
Texas Alliance President Alex Mills
says the study alleges fracturing is
dangerous to the environment and
human health. However this statement
is irresponsible and without scientific
fact, Mills argues.
"Every state and federal regulator of
oil and gas, including the U.S. secretary
of energy and administrators at the
Environmental Protection Agency, have
countered allegations publically that
hydraulic fracturing has polluted
groundwater and air," Mills states.
There have been no confirmed cases
of groundwater contamination from
hydraulic fracturing, and the study's
attempt to connect the two "are both
reckless and desperate," TIPRO
President Ed Longanecker comments.
"Hydraulic fracturing has
revolutionized domestic oil and gas
production, and continues to be
performed safely and responsibly not
only in West Texas, but throughout the
nation," Longanecker adds.
"Additionally, the report makes no
reference to the profound advancements
in fluid technology and proactive efforts
taken by industry and state regulatory
agencies to reduce the amount of
freshwater used in exploration and
production methods."
Longanecker also points out that the
industry is heavily monitored and
regulated by the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality and the Texas
Railroad Commission, which has
adopted the most stringent wellbore
integrity guidelines in the country. Also,
