where rotary torque may become an issue,
it might be better to use an OBM," he allows.
"But over time, the application window
for the POLYTRAXX WBM has broadened as we have come up with ways to
reduce the system's lubricity coefficient,
which we have gotten to 0.10 to 0.12,"
Tolbert says. "Applications for the system
will continue to expand, as we are working
on a lubricant that will reduce the lubricity
coefficient to the 0.07 coefficient typical
of an OBM, or below."

Versatile LCMs
To help minimize the risk and cost
associated with lost circulation events,
Halliburton's Baroid service line has introduced four lost circulation materials
(LCMs). BaraShieldTM-663 and the coarser
BaraShield™-664 are designed to help
prevent lost circulation, while BaraBlendTM-665 and BaraLockTM-666 are
for remediation.
"These solutions are designed to save
time and money," says Nils KaagesonLoe, Baroid's fluids strategic business
manager. "They are engineered, singlesack solutions designed to work over a
range of lost circulation conditions. Because the materials for those conditions
come in one sack, they are easy to apply,
and the driller has to store less inventory

at the drill site.
"The concept of a one-sack solution
has been around a few years," Kaageson-Loe acknowledges. "The evolution
has been in understanding how these onesack products work and optimizing their
performance. BaraShield-663 and BaraShield-664 are a culmination of field experience, and research and development
focused on designing both products to
work quickly and effectively."
BaraShield-663 is a finer material for
treating moderately permeable formations
and smaller fractures, while BaraShield664 is for unconsolidated formations and
fractures as large as 1.5 millimeters, he
says. "In North Dakota, customers who
use these materials are saving as much
as $500,000," Kaageson-Loe reports.
As an example, he cites an operator
who was experiencing severe mud losses
while drilling through the Rival formation
in the Beaver Lodge Field. To address
those issues, the operator added
BaraShield-664 to the fluid system. Mud
losses still occurred on entering the formation, but the LCM sealed the problem
areas fast enough that the losses quickly
subsided, Kaageson-Loe reports.
The LCM cut mud loss volumes 81
percent compared with previous wells
and helped the operator drill the section
2.5 days faster than average for the area,

Kaageson-Loe says. He calculates the
product saved the operator $227,000.
The BaraBlend-665 and BaraLock666 remediation materials use a novel
foam technology, Kaageson-Loe continues. "It is a highly permeable, compressible
synthetic foam that has been designed
specifically to address losses in a fracture
zone. The foam particles form a network
that is porous enough to allow fluid to go
through at first. The fluid presses particulate matter from the sack against the
foam, creating a cake that is impermeable
and difficult to remove," he details.
"In the past, we would have used a fibrous product to form a lattice or network
within the fracture that captured particulate
material to form a plug," he recalls. "With
the foam, we can create the plug and
prevent fluid losses more quickly."
To illustrate the LCM's effectiveness,
Kaageson-Loe again turns to the Rival
formation in North Dakota. After a rig
lost complete returns while drilling through
the formation, with a loss rate of four
barrels a minute while pumping and three
barrels a minute while static, the operator
pumped two 80-barrel pills containing
BaraBlend-665 and BaraLock-666 into
the formation. The loss rate dropped to
0.01 barrels a minute while static and to
0.20 barrels a minute while pumping, allowing the operator to resume drilling.
With the pill's rapid response, Kaageson-Loe says the operator beat the average
time to drill the intermediate interval by
4.8 days and saved 1,443 barrels of oilbased mud for a total savings of $556,000.
Fluid Loss Additive
To control fluid loss in high-pressure,
high-temperature wells, Drilling Specialties
Company, a division of Chevron Phillips
Chemical Company LP, has developed
Drill-Sure® OBM additive. Elan Watson,
Drilling Specialties' director of product
development, emphasizes that it is manufactured rather than mined.
"Quality can vary significantly with a
mined product, especially as time passes
and the available supply dwindles," he
points out. "We have much greater control
over the quality of a manufactured product.
As a result, Drill-Sure OBM additive is
two to five times more effective than the
uintahite-based additives traditionally
used.
"Because of the lower concentration,
we need to take less product to the well,
which results in a lower drilling fluid
