Crude Oil Production Down In January
WASHINGTON-At 9.2 million barrels a day, U.S. crude oil production in
January fell by 0.8 percent (100,000 barrels a day) from December 2015 and was
down by 1.4 percent from January 2015,
according to the American Petroleum Institute's Monthly Statistical Report for
January.
This was the fourth consecutive monthly decline, API reports.
Lower-48 production in January was
at its lowest level since November 2014
at 8.6 MMbbl/d, API points out. This was
down 0.9 percent from December and was
2.2 percent lower than in January 2015.
Texas crude oil production slipped 3.3
percent below its December level, averaging just below 3.4 MMbbl/d. Nevertheless, API says this was 0.4 percent above
Texas' January 2015 output and was the
highest January production level ever
posted by the state. API says Permian
Basin production continued to increase to
just more than 2.0 MMbbl/d.
However, the institute notes, North
Dakota production declined for the fifth
consecutive month. At 1.2 MMbbl/d, North

Dakota's production was down 0.7 percent
from both December and January 2015.
Both the Bakken and Eagle Ford shales
posted production declines in January, averaging 1.1 MMbbl/d and 1.3 MMbbl/d,
respectively, API details.
The institute says natural gas liquids
production was up from both the prior
month and prior year. January NGL production averaged 3.4 MMbbl/d, which
was up by 1.2 percent from December and
was 14.2 percent higher than January
2015. This was the highest January output level on record.
API says production of natural gas in
the Marcellus region fell for the third consecutive month, declining by 0.7 percent
from December to just over 16 billion cubic feet a day. However, API notes, that
was up 1.6 percent from January 2015.
Crude oil stocks ended January at 501.6
million barrels, the highest January inventory level in 86 years, API says.
Crude stocks were up 3.6 percent from
December, and were up 19.0 percent from
January 2015.
Total petroleum deliveries in the Unit-

ed States moved up by 0.8 percent from
the prior year to 19.4 MMbbl/d in January, which API says were the highest January deliveries in eight years. Compared
with December 2015, however, U.S. petroleum demand fell by 1.4 percent.
Gasoline deliveries in January were up
from the prior year, but were down from
the prior month, API mentions. Total gasoline demand moved up 1.4 percent from
January 2015 to 8.8 MMbbl/d, the highest January demand since 2007.
Refinery gross inputs moved up by 2.5
percent from January 2015 to reach a new
high for the month, averaging 16.2 MMbbl/d, API reports. Nevertheless, this was
down 545,000 bbl/d, or 3.3 percent, from
December 2015. API says production of
all four major products-gasoline, distillate, jet fuel and residual fuels-was higher than demand for those products.
January gasoline production averaged
nearly 9.5 MMbbl/d, up 1.6 percent from
the prior year, but down 2.4 percent from
the prior month. Distillate production declined by 4.8 percent from January 2015
and by 10.3 percent from December. ❒
