in that effort, Barr says. "Lubricating oil
is the second greatest expense in the gas
compression business, so we constantly
are looking for ways to reduce oil consumption, such as oil sweetening systems
and monitoring our lubricating rates closely," he adds.
Barr points out that J-W Power offers
variable service contracts. "Many customers need the 24/7 response and service
our traditional contracts offer, but for
noncritical sites that do not require service
after-hours or on weekends, these contracts
allow us to reduce our costs and pass
savings on to the customer," he says.
As operators scrutinize their budgets,
many are eliminating redundant compression capacity, Barr acknowledges.
"We are seeing a few customers reduce
costs by using bigger compressors to
serve multiple wells," he comments.
Compressed natural gas vehicles have
helped J-W Power keep its operations
lean, Barr says. "Wherever we have access
to CNG-including Longview, Tx., Shreveport, La., and cities across Oklahoma-
we have invested in bifuel vehicles," he

says. "As well as costing less, CNG burns
more cleanly than gasoline and extends
engine life, so in the long run, using it
reduces our operating costs."
Barr notes that J-W Power has provided
compressors for CNG stations since the
1990s. He says the company's latest product, J-W PowerFillâ„¢, uses a patent-pending technology to reduce the average
time to refill a vehicle from 20 minutes
to five.
"J-W PowerFill costs more than a traditional compressor, but that is offset by
needing less horsepower for each gasoline
gallon equivalent, which reduces the customer's cost of ownership," Barr says.
"While it may not be a fit for every CNG
application, it is a great benefit for fast
fills that create a better CNG fueling experience for the customer."
Couple-Free Technology
To help gas producers cut capital and
operating costs in gathering and processing
applications, GE Oil & Gas has added
the 1,500 rpm speed CFR5 and the 1,200
rpm speed CFH6 compressor models to

its portfolio. Bhupinder Dayal, GE Oil
& Gas' senior product manager for high
speed reciprocating compression, says
both compressors employ a couple-free
design.
"In a traditional reciprocating compressor, there is an offset between the
opposing throws, whereas in the CFR5
and CFH6 compressors, the opposing
throws have a common centerline. In
other words, they are exactly opposite
each other," Dayal describes. "This eliminates dynamic moments and couples,
which are primary sources of vibration.
"Because the couple-free compressors
have very low vibrations, their packages
don't require as much skid and pedestal
material and mass, so the packages cost
less to build," Dayal says. "Also, the low
inherent vibrations make it possible for a
compressor package to be placed on a
compact caliche bed instead of being
grouted into a cement pad."
Not only will this significantly reduce
package costs, Dayal states that lower
vibration will extend equipment life. He
