On SCOOP, STACK Plays

Jack Stark, president and chief operating officer of Continental Resources Inc., uses a
baseball analogy to describe his own company's "field of dreams:" a trio of liquids-rich
resource plays.
Oklahoma City-based Continental Resources is the leading leaseholder in the Bakken
Shale in North Dakota, a play that Stark describes as in the "middle innings." The
company's other two major positions are emerging plays in Oklahoma: the South Central
Oklahoma Oil Province (SCOOP), which Continental developed first, and now the Sooner
Trend Anadarko Canadian Kingfisher (STACK).
"The SCOOP Woodford is in the first or second innings, and the SCOOP Springer is
definitely in the first inning," Stark comments. "Six months ago, we were still in the
batter's box in STACK. Now, we are on base. We have diverse and high-quality assets
with various levels of maturity for both near- and long-term development. I have never
seen such a great base of opportunity. It has been a great effort by our technical team to
get us leading positions."
Stark says he was drilling conventional Springer wells 20 years ago in the area that is
now the STACK Meramec play. Continental held legacy acreage in STACK, according to
Stark, so the company did not test the STACK immediately when the play began.
"We were working diligently in the SCOOP, putting our dollars there," he recalls. "Then
in the middle of last year, results were announced by other operators in the overpressured
STACK. That got our attention and we decided to focus on our position. For two months,
our technical team did an intensive study. We determined that 95 percent of our 155,000
net acres was situated ideally in the overpressured Meramec."
