will make oil and gas and other heavy

while lowering the amount of training
and experience required to perform various
tasks."
With those trends in mind, Burger
says National Instruments is looking for
visionary artificial lift experts who want
to develop systems that take asset monitoring and control to the next level. "We
see our hardware and software as ideal
for people who are developing new, more
nuanced monitoring protocols that require
faster processing," he says.
Burger points out that the company's
PLCs can include quad-core processors
if the application needs that much power.
"We also have field-programmable gate
arrays (FPGAs). These standard computing
chips are used in millions of embedded
devices, but we allow the domain expert
to target and reprogram them," he outlines.
"The FPGA works in parallel with the
processor, receiving sensor measurements
and determining the correct response in
as little as 25 nanoseconds."
The chip's quick turnaround time already has proven beneficial in oil and
gas. Engineers at National Oilwell Varco
report using the FPGA to monitor mud
pump vibrations in order to quickly identify valve leaks. In addition to being
faster and more reliable than the manual
approach, the engineers say this method
reduces human exposure to dangerous
pressures and ear-damaging noise.
Many of National Instruments' products
can withstand the extreme temperatures,
weather and vibration encountered in oil
field applications, Burger assures. He
adds that the company's development environment, LabVIEW, makes it relatively
