survey, 74 percent of respondents
believe diversification is very important
to a pension fund's overall performance,
with majorities identifying technology,
energy, utilities and healthcare as
sectors that a well-diversified portfolio
needed to invest in.
IPAA points out that its survey
follows a report by Hendrik
Bessembinder, an Arizona State
University professor, that quantifies the
"fractional" costs of divestment-
primarily transactional and
compliance-related costs that all
institutions that attempt to fully divest
would bear simply for executing those
transactions. The research shows those
costs could exceed $7.4 billion for a
large portfolio over 20 years, which
would come on top of any performancerelated losses incurred as a result of
having a less-diversified portfolio. ❒
Gas Storage Levels
Increase By 233 Bcf

natural gas storage in the United States
stood at 3.140 trillion cubic feet on June
24, 25.4 percent above the five year
average, according to the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. That was
up 233 billion cubic feet from the 2.907
Tcf in storage on May 27, which was
35.0 percent above the five-year
average. The June 24 storage number
was 581 Bcf more than a year ago,
when gas storage stood at 2.559 Tcf.
According to EIA, gas storage in the
East Region was 632 Bcf on June 24,
11.1 percent above the five-year average
and 95 Bcf more than on May 27, when
storage stood at 537 Bcf, which was
16.0 percent above the five-year average.
East Region gas storage on June 24 was
88 Bcf more than a year ago.
Gas storage in the Midwest Region
stood at 742 Bcf on June 24, 29.0
percent above the five-year average and
87 Bcf more than the 655 Bcf in storage
on May 27, which was 41.5 percent
above the five year average. June 24 gas
storage in the Midwest Region was 204
Bcf more than a year ago.
In the Mountain Region, EIA says,
gas storage was 198 Bcf on June 24,
37.5 percent above the five-year average
and 20 Bcf more than the 178 Bcf
stored on May 27, which was 41.3
percent above the five year average. Gas
storage in the Mountain Region was up
44 Bcf from a year ago.
Gas storage in the Pacific Region
was 315 Bcf on June 24, 6.1 percent
above the five-year average and 11 Bcf
more than the 304 Bcf stored on May
27, which was 16.0 percent above the
five-year average. Pacific Region gas
storage on June 24 was down 18 Bcf
from a year ago.
In the South-Central Region, gas
storage levels on June 24 were 1.253
Tcf, 36.5 percent above the five-year
average and up 20 Bcf from the 1.233
Tcf in storage on May 27, which was
46.6 percent above the five-year
average. The June 24 gas storage level
for the South-Central Region was up
263 Bcf from a year ago. ❒
