Baker Hughes' New Bits Marry Speed, Durability
HOUSTON-Baker Hughes Inc. has
commercially released its Kymera™
XTreme line of hybrid drill bits, which
it says combine the strengths of PDC
and tricone bit technology. According
to the company, Kymera XT bits offer
the smooth, consistent performance of
previous generations of hybrid bits, while
dramatically improving penetration rates
and run life.
The bits drill much faster than previous
generation hybrids and offer a dynamicbalanced design that reduces torque fluctuations to minimize bit damage, Baker
Hughes reports, saying they deliver efficient,
effective performance in both vertical and
curve sections. The bits also offer superior
steerability and control in difficult environments, including carbonates and interbedded formations, the company adds.
The Kymera XT bits' sharper, more
durable cutting structures incorporate

enhanced shapes and carbide grades for
improved aggressiveness and accelerated
penetration rates, Baker Hughes continues. The company says these advanced
designs provide added tool face control,
enabling the bits to drill long distances
at higher build rates than was previously
possible, while maintaining a high-quality
borehole throughout extended runs.
"Kymera XTreme hybrid bits combine
the control and rock-crushing strength
of a tricone bit with the speed and
shearing action of a PDC bit, and, in almost every case, are more durable than
either of the alternatives," says Scott
Schmidt, Baker Hughes' vice president
of drill bits. "This combination delivers
a bit capable of drilling longer vertical
and curve sections at higher speeds and
in a variety of challenging formations."

The latest-generation KymeraTM
Xtreme hybrid drill bits from
Baker Hughes feature sharper,
more durable cutting structures. The company adds they
can be customized to deliver a
variety of benefits, including
long, section-to-section runs
and enhanced durability during
transitions between formations.

SweetSpotter By WellDog Helps Prioritize Locations
SAN ANTONIO-WellDog Pty Ltd.
has launched the Shale SweetSpotter
service, which it describes as the first
commercial reservoir-evaluation analysis
technology specific to unconventional
natural gas, following successful field
trials with Shell International Exploration
& Production Inc.
According to WellDog, the unique,
next-generation downhole technology uses
lasers and sophisticated detectors to pinpoint
natural gas and natural gas liquids in shale
formations, allowing producers to focus
development efforts, reduce drilling costs,
optimize production, and reduce the number
of hydraulic fracturing stages and associated
water usage.

WellDog says the service uses its awardwinning Reservoir Raman System, which
was developed to find sweet spots in
coalbed methane formations, and has been
adapted for shale-based applications.
Shale SweetSpotter aims to increase
the number of producing fractures by 100
percent or more, a goal it accomplishes by
using the industry's only downhole Raman
spectrometer to directly identify locations
of producible hydrocarbons across formations, WellDog says. The company indicates
the service is more accurate, reliable, affordable and quick to deploy than traditional
lab-based services.

Atlas Copco Provides Air
For Work Offshore Canada
ANTWERP, BELGIUM-When a leading Canadian contractor needed dry, oilfree air to perform work on an offshore
project, it turned to Atlas Copco Rental
for a solution that would meet requirements
and exceed expectations, Atlas Copco AB
reports.
The job took place on a Canadian oil
field to be developed through a stand-alone
concrete gravity-based structure (GBS) designed to store more than 1 million barrels
of crude oil. The contractor was selected to
precommission the living quarters and the
platform structure, and assemble the modules
on the GBS, Atlas Copco says.
To carry out the job, the contractor
needed a compressor that could produce
oil-free utility and instrument air with a 40 degrees F dew point, Atlas Copco relates. The compressor had to be reliable,
portable, energy efficient, and capable of
meeting stringent air quality and documentation requirements, the company
adds.
The contractor completed the job with
the then-newest member of Atlas Copco's
fleet, a PTS 800 Tier 4 Final that delivers
oil-free air at medium pressure and at a
lower air flow. According to the company,
the unit has a smaller build on a wheeled
frame for improved mobility, and an impressively small environmental footprint.
