is compressed. If it gets too hot, or if
there is an ignition source such as an
electrical arc in the presence of a proper
oxygen mixture, it can ignite and pose a
danger to people and equipment," he explains.
To keep that from happening, Rodriguez urges operators to insist on equipment that carries Class 1, Division 2 certification. He says his company offers a
low-cost controller for small VRU compressors that has Class 1, Division 2 certification.
"The controller is designed to be flexible," he reports. "It can interface with
electric motors and mechanical engines,
and with rotary scroll, rotary vane and
reciprocating compressors."
In designing the controller, Rodriguez
says Murphy looked for ways to reduce
costs. "Toward that end, we put as many
capabilities as we could under the hood.
While we can do custom engineering,
the controller is designed to be an offthe-shelf product that can be configured
through the keypad."
When paired with an electronic engine,
it can read and display engine data such
as rpm, oil pressure, manifold pressure,
and even faults, eliminating the need for
a secondary engine display, Rodriguez
says. "To reduce costs even further, we
can integrate the controller with our most
popular air/fuel ratio controller or our
engine integrated control system, which
is designed to optimize both engine performance and emissions," he adds.
By eliminating the need for separate
enclosures and the associated wiring, Rodriguez says the integrated versions reduce
installation costs and improve reliability.
"Customers can change the units for
pressures and temperatures from imperial
to metric using the keypad," Rodriguez
remarks. "We added that feature in response to requests from customers who
needed to recover vapors in international
markets such as Canada, Mexico, and
South America."
