Maintaining a healthy awareness of
false positives and false negatives is a
complementary step to any multivariate
analysis. Stepping out from known data
points should be done with caution, recognizing the local spatial distribution of
the original calibration dataset. While
new landing points may appear in profusion, fundamental, physics-based geomechanical frac modeling, in conjunction
with reservoir quality assessments, still
is integral to maximizing results.
Variance should be expected in individual
well results that are in line with the prediction accuracy from multivariate analysis.
Applying conventional variance analysis
and probabilistic graphical techniques can
assist in communicating the predicted limitations associated with this workflow. ❒

JOE WICKER is a senior geologist
at Laredo Petroleum. He joined the
company as a project geologist in 2012
after beginning his career as a geologist
working in East Texas and the Haynesville Shale for XTO Energy, and
then in the Mississippian Lime and
Woodford Shale for PetroQuest Energy.
Wicker holds an M.S. in geology from
Oklahoma State University.

TRAVIS JEFFERS is a senior petrophysicist at Laredo Petroleum. Before
joining the company in 2014, he served
11 years at Halliburton, including time
as technical adviser for petrophysics/wireline and perforating, wireline and perforating service manager, performance development coordinator, log analyst, and
field engineer. Jeffers holds a B.S. mechanical engineering from Texas A&M
University.
PAT CURTH is senior vice president
of exploration and land at Laredo Petroleum. He has been involved in exploration
and development projects in the MidContinent for more than three decades,
and previously served in exploration and
management roles at Latigo Petroleum
and Lariat Petroleum. Curth holds a B.A.
in geology from Windham College, a
master's in geological sciences from the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and
a master's in environmental sciences
from Oklahoma State University.
