Initial steps were made to take 20
sub-bands from 8 to 85 hertz. These
results suggested a further look at the
linear/octave trace/envelope sub-bands
between 12 and 50 Hz. From these analyses, two sub-bands stood out: a linear
sub-band 24.7 Hz and an octave subband 26.5 Hz.
They were selected based on the best
resolution of the disconformity between
the lower Austin Chalk and the Eagle
Ford. Instantaneous PCA and SOMs then
were applied to each of the two selected
linear sub-bands used as new base surveys.
The data in each case were delimited by
area and by horizon.
Among the key results revealed by
this analysis were the delineation of faults
and unconformities, stratal variations,
lithologic changes, probable karst features,
and stacking variations/scours.
Figure 5 shows the instantaneous SOM
result for the Linear 24.7 Hz sub-band
displayed in southwest-to-northeast crosslines through two neighboring wells (see
inset). Stratal variations are rapid and
subtle.
In the Eagle Ford, turning off green
neurons 1 and 2 blanks out two continuous
facies bands in the upper Eagle Ford at
well 3, while only a smattering of pixels
are gone at well 4. Also in the right view,
two additional semicontinuous green neurons
(9 and 17) are present in the upper part of
the Eagle Ford. Both views share the basal
green bands of neurons 25 and 26.
Figures 6A and 6B show the instantaneous SOM results for the 26.5 Hz subband. Angular unconformity features at
the base of the Austin Chalk and phenomenal karsts can be seen, and are enhanced
by an interactive color map. Again, the
unconformity and key stratigraphic features
apparent in these images were invisible
on a conventional seismic display.
This process of visually correlating
the SOM results to well and core information produced clear relationships that
are compelling, stratigraphically valid,
and geologically sound.
