Jim Henry
The Board of Directors of the Permian Basin International Oil Show did
not have to look far to find an industry giant to serve as the 2014 Show
Honoree. Seeking to recognize an individual whose contributions to
our industry are both far reaching and impactful, the board selected
Midland's Jim Henry as the Honoree for the 2014 oil show.
Jim Henry was born in 1934 in Andagoya, Colombia, to American
parents. He earned his bachelor's and master's in petroleum
engineering from the University of Oklahoma.
Mr. Henry began his career as an engineer with Humble Oil in
McCamey, Tx. Entering the Air Force as an officer, he served two
years researching liquid hydrogen at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He returned to work for Humble with
assignments in Houston, Midland and Andrews, Tx. In 1964, Jim went to work for Skelly Oil Company in Tulsa
as a reservoir engineer.
Jim returned to Midland in January 1969, becoming the chief engineer for Solar Oil. Shortly thereafter, he
and Bob Landenberger founded H&L Consultants.
Henry bought out Landenberger in 1977 and renamed the company Henry Petroleum. Throughout the 1970s
and 1980s, Henry Petroleum was one of the most active independent producers in the Spraberry trend. In the
1990s, the company expanded its focus in secondary and tertiary operations. Henry unitized seven secondary
floods, including a unique immiscible, secondary carbon dioxide flood during this decade.
By 2000, Jim once again had returned to the Spraberry. His company discovered how to make the Wolfberry
economical, and since 2003 has drilled more than 900 wells. In 2008, Jim sold Henry Petroleum to Concho
Resources and began Henry Resources. He quickly grew his new venture and sold again to Linn Energy in
2010. Henry Resources has restarted again and is operating four drilling rigs: two in the Wolfberry and two
testing other areas.
Mr. Henry has been inducted into the Permian Basin Petroleum Hall of Fame and has received the Permian
Basin Petroleum Association's Top Hand Award. He has been recognized as the Engineer of the Year by the
Texas Society of Petroleum Engineers, and was elected into the SPE Permian Basin Hall of Fame.
Jim also has received numerous community awards, including the United Way Honorary Life Member Award,
the Centennial Citizen Award, the HOPE Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Person
of Vision Award from Prevent Blindness.
He has received the University of Oklahoma's Distinguished Alumni Award and the Distinguished Citizen
Award from the Buffalo Trail Council Boy Scouts of America. He is chairman of the Bush Tennis Center
in Midland. He also serves on the boards of the Midland College Foundation and the Henry Foundation.
Currently, he is focusing his efforts on fundraising for the Bush Tennis Center and writing children's books.
Married to his wonderful wife, Paula, for 50 years, the couple has three children and 11 grandchildren.
