"These wells have provided us with a
wealth of information."
He adds that the 14 laterals, which
exploited multiple targets, averaged 8,400
feet.

proudest of is that we had close to 1
million man-hours on the project with
no safety incidents."
Remarkably, he adds, Encana went
from spud to production on the 14 wells
in only 120 days. The RAB Davidson
pad peaked at 12,000 boe/d and still is
producing more than 10,000 boe/d.
"That is a lot of production for only
120 days," Balmer marvels. "There were
other operational benefits, too, such as

sand delivery and eliminating multiple
rig moves. And there was healthy competition among the crews. I don't know
if we can quantify the benefits of that,
but they definitely were substantial."
Balmer says Encana expects to learn
from every well, and that certainly was
true with the 14-well pad.
"We installed permanent bottom-hole
pressure gauges in each well, which
allows us to watch the relationships between each well in terms of production

Continuous Improvement
Balmer says Encana is "actively reinvestigating proppant concentration and
when we should modify it."
"We are integrating information and
learning as we go," he continues. "We are
studying the relationship between the pump
schedule and ramping up proppant. The
recipes are different, depending on what
zone and county we are in. Depth and
pressure change from one area to another.
For example, the recipe for the amount of
proppant in the Lower Spraberry in Martin
County can be totally different from the
Wolfcamp in Glasscock County."
Balmer claims Encana has allowed-
and even encouraged-his team to employ
integrated experimental designs, including
geosciences, pump and proppant, geological considerations, artificial lift, spacing
and stacking.
"It all goes under one team," he states.
"Of course, profitability and maximizing
production are the most important, but
