ACC CardioCareer & CME Guide - March 2008v8 - (Page 15) increasing the supply of cardiologists. Part of the future of the profession lies in the government’s willingness to increase graduate medical education funding to make more training positions and programs available. From a practice perspective, there are numerous options depending upon practice size and the willingness of physicians and staff to look at alternatives. Some options include: • Adding mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical nurse specialists, to help distribute patient care duties and reduce demands on physicians. • Extending the careers of older physicians. • Addressing work-life balance issues by adopting modifications, hiring or training support staff, offering part-time options to physicians, and other similar options. • Developing collaborative arrangements with academic programs: in exchange for financially supporting the fellowship training of one or more cardiology fellows, a practice could receive clinical coverage from fellows rotating in their practice. Overall, the challenges created by the shortage of cardiovascular specialists must be addressed with the primary goal of providing accessible, quality patient care both now and the future.
