ACC CardioCareer & CME Guide - March 2008v8 - (Page 25) Tips for a Successful Interview: The Interview Itself 1. Relax. Show energy, enthusiasm, optimism, and selfconfidence. 2. Be yourself. Seasoned interviewers can see through an act. 3. Be honest. Don’t try to second-guess what the interviewer wants to hear. 4. Ask for the job. Don’t ask about call schedules, salary, the partnership track, or benefits. These aren’t questions for the first interview. “Never forget that you’re being interviewed for your qualities as a partner,” says Dr. Walsh. “I don’t want to be in practice for the rest of my career with someone whose top priorities are all economic. I want to hear how much you like taking care of patients.” Remember, you’re not a fellow anymore. Your prospective employer is not looking to hire a student. They’re looking for a professional who brings the skills to help further the goals of the practice or institution. Show that you’re up to the task. Follow-Up The interview is winding down. What can you do to cement your chances of getting an offer? First, make sure that you conveyed that you do indeed want the job. “It’s perfectly appropriate to be direct,” says Dr. Walsh. “As you’re leaving, say that you’d be honored to work with us, or that you think you could spend your career here. We want to hear that you’re genuinely interested.” Second, follow up in an appropriate way. “Send a note – email is fine – to the person who interviewed you,” says Dr. Page. “It’s an opportunity to say you appreciate their time and to show your interest and enthusiasm.” u This article was reproduced with permission from the Fall 2007 issue of ACC’s Fellows-in-Training News, Vol. I, No. 1.
