ACC CardioCareer & CME Guide - March 2008v8 - (Page 27) Tips for Achieving Work-Life Balance Here is some advice from women cardiologists regarding how to achieve work-life balance: “Don’t try to do everything and you won’t be overwhelmed. Even if you’re single, it’s best to be very quick to ask for help.” –Lynne Perry-Bottinger, MD, FACC “Achieving work-life balance isn’t easy, but it’s doable. You need to identify your priorities in life and what choices you will be happy with. A supportive home environment is also key.” –Anita Deswal, MD, FACC Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, FACC, Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, presented this advice at an ACC course for early-career academicians a few years ago: “Eliminating early morning and after-hours meetings can make life much easier for parents who have to drop off or pick up children at childcare. Part-time career tracks also provide muchneeded flexibility. Employers can make adjustments to length of tenure, as well. There’s nothing fixed about seven years. If men or women need more time because of family issues, that’s not a problem.” Concerning balancing family and career, Dr. Nabel advised: “You’ll learn quickly that things have to be done in a compromising way. Family issues are something neither partner can handle by themselves.” She also recommended establishing a game plan for one’s career for the short- and long-term. “Identifying mentors, nurturing professional relationships, and participating in professional organizations like the ACC are also key.” u Michigan Cardiology Positions The following positions are available in southeast Michigan: Division Chief, Cardiology Cardiac Electrophysiologists Heart Failure Specialists Candidates should have a strong desire to service an underserved urban area, an interest in research and publications, and a commitment to education and teaching.
