LEFT The Anvil line of wood

surfaces from GROTHOUSE
imitates metal countertops in
look and function but can be
used in curved profile applications and complex shapes
not previously possible in
sheet metal products. Just
like real metal countertops,
the surfaces develop a rich
patina over time or can be
coated with a durable finish to
maintain their original look.

Shown here in black crocodile, the ECODOMO Recycled
Leather Countertop is 0.8
mm thick and has proven
its durability in high-traffic
settings, including wet areas
of the home.

The budding Milwaukee
Junction neighborhood,
where Ford's first model T
was made, is paired with an
antique finish in WILSONART's
new Forgotten Detroit
laminate collection with
19 patterns. Milwaukee
Junction Oxide features the
look of distressed deep gray
oxidized steel.

According to Fraser, the most important thing
for clients choosing natural stone is to be sure they
understand the performance of the material. Then
designers can focus on the character of the stone,
its unique attributes and then cost.
Whatever natural stone is chosen, the primary
goal is usually the look, but durability is always
high on the priority list. Granite is arguably the
most popular natural stone. While harder than
marble, it is not advisable to cut on it or place hot
pans on it. Soapstone similarly is valued for its
imperviousness, but it can incur scratches.
NON-STONE OPTIONS

"Clients today are looking for anything from
ultra-durable surfaces that capture the movement and drama of natural stone - a trend that
still reigns - or something that completely deviates
for a more modern appeal that's ultra reflective
and chic," explained Marquez.
Unlike natural stone countertops that are cut
from slabs of granite, marble or sandstone, engineered quartz uses quartz crystals that are held
together with a resin binder. This binds the minerals together and makes the material non-porous.
According to Marquez, patterns across countertop
slabs are gradually increasing in popularity because
of the improved technology in surface designs.
"We hear more that consumers want products
that are easy to care for, durable and that reflect the
beauty of nature,"said Erika Egede-Nissen, director of brand marketing for Caesarstone USA, adding that Caesarstone has recently released quartz
inspired by concrete, marble and granite. "White
and gray surfaces remain hot, but we are also seeing customers mixing colors in a single space and
blurring the lines of traditional and modern styles."
Modern options in line with natural stone
include solid surface materials, which are usually engineered from acrylics and resin for a lowmaintenance, high-performance quality. With
this option, it's easy to craft seamless pieces.

16

"Because of the versatility and durability of the material, high-performance
options are becoming more popular with homeowners, as well as with experts
in the architectural field,"said Esteve."New materials such as sintered surfaces
are thriving now because they offer the aesthetics of natural stone like marble
and granite but in a low-maintenance, durable option."
Sintered compact surfaces look just like natural surfaces, but users can chop
directly on them, use any cleaning agent and will not have to worry about
common countertop issues like staining or scratching.
LAMINATE RETURNS

Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to provide that safe and lovely
surface for residential use. One of the innovations that took off in the 1950s
and '60s was laminate, and this durable and versatile material is trending
again today.
"This material is still making its way into kitchens everywhere," said Sally
Chavez, senior designer at Wilsonart. "Whether homeowners are using
laminate to replicate natural materials or to pull off a bold look with complex
patterns and textures, laminate has evolved to offer a wide variety of visual
options that help homeowners convey their personality in their home."
Laminate is made with sheets of paper, including a decorative layer and
a melamine resin. Thanks to improvements in production technology and
plastics, laminates are available in increasingly realistic looks and can even
have the same texture as a natural product.
Laminate's budget-friendly,versatile surface has helped continue its popularity.
Product developments that create a more natural appearance, such as complex
edges and high-definition graphics, will also keep the material in the running.
"These and other new advancements allow laminate surfaces to stand up
longer to everyday wear and tear and keep them looking fresher, longer,"said
Chavez, adding that these new improvements include scratch and scruff
resistance and antimicrobial protection.
SPECIALIZED OPTIONS

The unprecedented appeal for a mix of both rustic and modern or traditional
and eclectic designs has driven even more unique choices.
"Increased customization is highly desired, featuring everything from
custom-edge profiles, stain matching to integrated bowls and custom miter shapes," said Denise Grothouse, chief brand officer at Grothouse Inc.
"Mixing surfaces is a strong trend, with stone or metal countertops on the
perimeter and wood - or even mixed materials - for the island."
Walnut and cherry wood are popular contrasting options to other materials
like stone or stainless steel, with bamboo following closely for a slightly more
modern feel. Butcher-block wood is also a highly requested work surface since
it doubles well as a cutting board.
Along with wood, trends in Europe show that another incoming development is for more colorful quartzites and even semi-precious stones.
Glass similarly will come into play more often as recycled materials and
colorful palettes rise in demand. Many homeowners are beginning to
backlight their counters to enhance translucent materials, while others
use the same or coordinating slabs for their kitchen tables to match
their countertops.
"In terms of fabrication, a growing trend is using a slab - whatever
the material - as a vertical waterfall detail to finish off an install rather
than keeping the side of the edge of the cabinets' or kitchen island's
wood exposed," said Levinson. "The results are polished, sophisticated
and wonderfully modern."
