BRINGING IN MODERN LUXURY

Since the beams and the dark wood cabinetry
took care of referencing the building's past, the
design team used the countertops and lighting
to bring in contemporary touches.The perimeter
countertops and backsplash are both made of a
dark lava stone called Basaltina. Resistant to stain
and wear, the dark material is meant to blend well
with the wood cabinetry. Meanwhile, the island
is stainless steel topped with white Calacatta
Gold marble.
"This variation was done so that the island feels
like a piece of furniture and is distinct from the
surrounding cabinetry," said the designer. "The
gentle gray veining of the white Calacatta Gold
adds a bright and dramatic center to the kitchen."
Above the island, the pendant lights were chosen to pick up the polished chrome details of the
kitchen and work well with the other details of
the kitchen and apartment. According to Ruddy,
the team designed the kitchen without dining
pendants so that homeowners can select a pendant that matches their taste. By installing these
pendants above the island, they kept a neutral,
modern palette that complements the kitchen's
handcrafted character and historical references.
"Working with historic buildings, I always
believe that we are stewards of history," said
Ruddy. "It was exciting and inspiring to research the history of the building and to give
it new life in a manner that respects its provenance while bringing it into the future for gracious, modern living."

