owntown Winston-Salem is
not a singular experience.
With more than 100 restaurants, 20 museums and
galleries, a handful of craft
breweries, and dozens of shops and small
businesses, how could it be? Begin at the
historic West End, where restaurants and
a brewery beckon from Victorian-style
houses. Continue onward and enter the
Downtown Arts District - considered
the area along Trade and Liberty streets
between Fifth and Eighth streets -
where more restaurants abound, as well
as galleries and studios. Downtown's
new frontier is next: the visionary Wake
Forest Innovation Quarter. The new
mixed-use, high-tech community also
contains an urban community green
space, Bailey Park. Come sunset, head
back to the near-constant hum of activity
on Fourth Street: Catch an independent

dinner or cocktails out, or keep walking to BB&T Ballpark, the hometown
baseball spot. This is the heart of the city,
brimming with culture, friendly faces, and

Fourth Street is the artery anchoring
downtown. It runs from east to west,
connecting the quaint West End
Historic District to Wake Forest
Innovation Quarter before it intersects
North Main Street. Sometimes called

The West End Historic District is the
storied bookend to downtown

on the eastern side). Here, the streets
are infused with charm from houses and
buildings built between 1890 and 1930.
Much of the district is residential, which
is a walker or runner's delight. Many of
the homes are now shops and eateries,
including elegant Bernardin's Fine
Dining. For a cozy atmosphere, West
End Cafe is always full of locals eager
to greet a new face.
