oday's live productions are
becoming increasingly visually
complex in order to satisfy the
demands of critical viewers. The
industry has recognized the need for
a high-speed camera solution that
provides versatility, flexibility, and
easy integration into live production
workflows, which also delivers

such a solution with the LDX
XtremeSpeed (XS) ultra-slow-motion
camera, combined with the K2 Dyno
replay system, for stunning imagery
with super- and ultra-slow-motion
replay. This revolutionary combination
is fully equipped to meet today's live
production needs with features that
have never been seen before by the
industry.
The LDX XS camera system is built
around Grass Valley's proprietary
Xensium-FT CMOS imagers, to deliver
superb picture quality, high sensitivity,
and high dynamic range, for a wide
variety of production applications. The
LDX XS is also available in a compact
form factor, for when space is at a
premium.
With the LDX XS, Grass Valley is
driving pioneering advancements in
broadcast camera technology, and
setting new standards in ultra-slowmotion acquisition. LDX XS is the first
handheld ultra-slow-motion camera

with compelling features, which is
a first in the broadcast industry.
The camera easily integrates into
live workflows with 1x, 3x and 6x
acquisition in 1080i and 720p and
1x and 3x for 1080p acquisition.
Of note is the high quality, live 1x
standard-speed output, available in
any high-speed operation
for production flexibility.
This opens new doors for
broadcasters and producers
across the spectrum.
One
of
the
key
differentiators of the LDX
XS, compared to other ultra-slowmotion camera systems, is that there's
never a need to download any media
from a buffer recorder inside the
camera head. This means every frame
produced by the LDX XS camera will be
recorded onto the server, and can be
used at any time for highlight editing,
replays, etc. Not a single moment of
action will be missed or lost.
The LDX XS system is also equipped
with the unique AnyLightXtreme
feature to correct the problem of
artificial light flicker in ultra- and
super-slow-motion image capture. In
combination with the high sensitivity,
this dramatically improves the replay
performance under artificial lighting
conditions, and widens its usage in
indoor sports and studio applications.
Another advantage of the LDX XS
camera system is that it operates in
concert with the company's
K2 Dyno replay system with
AnySpeed, which consists of
the K2 Dyno S replay controller
and K2 Summit 3G production
client. Together, these technologies
provide ultra-smooth playback at
any speed, and transitions from zero
to 200% - dramatically increasing
the number of storytelling options
for broadcasters. For example,
a replay sequence can start with
regular (100%) speed and slow
down smoothly to 1/6 of that speed
(approx. 17%), when the action
becomes interesting, and then speed

up to regular speed again.
With this feature, the time needed
for playback of a complete replay
sequence is reduced, and all important
motion information can be shown.
Sharing content is effortless, based
on the K2 media server infrastructure
and
increased
content/metadata
integration, while the DynoZoom tool
allows for pan/zoom functions to be
applied to high frame rate camera
systems, including 3x 1080p, 6x, and
4K. K2 Dyno is the only replay system
currently in production with pan/zoom
capabilities that implement timeline
keyframes on all captured formats,
including 4K, that actively follows
a pan or zoom path created by the
operator. When applied to a clip saved
on the system, the keyframe points
become part of the clip's property, and
can be transferred to other K2 Dyno
replay systems using the DynoZoom
application. These clips can be recalled
for use at a later time, or even placed
in a playlist that can be further edited
for playout.
To fully support triple-speed 1080p
and 6x speed 720p/1080i ultra-slowmotion operations, Grass Valley has
developed a new fibre transmission,
the XCU XtremeSpeed XF Fibre,
which utilises the same XCU cradles
as its single-speed range of XCU base
stations. Since the XCU's unique cradle
can be premounted and prewired in

the rack, XCU base stations can quickly
and easily be transferred between
OB vans, studios, or any location,
extending usability and increasing ROI.
The LDX XS/K2 Dyno combo has
already gained considerable traction
in the industry, with orders from many
customers around the world, including
OB van operators, rental houses, and
more. Many of the cameras ordered
will be used at some of the world's
major sporting events, including
baseball, cricket, motor sports, and
professional and college football.
