Cavena: Subtitling
and Transcoding
Subtitling is mainly used for two things; to make foreign
language material accessible, and to aid the hearing impaired...
T
ranslation subtitling allows a
broadcaster to reach multiple
language audiences, which makes it
ideal for targeting multiple language
groups, since the viewer can select the
language to receive.
Subtitling is a legal requirement
in many countries, and allows those
with hearing impairments to follow
broadcasted content. If available,
subtitling follows the video to tablets
and smartphones.
How Does Subtitling Work?
Subtitling comprises of two stages -
preparation and transmission.
The preparation of the subtitle files,
along with the timecode required to
synchronise the subtitle with the video,
is done ahead of transmission. These
are delivered to the transmission
site in a format defined by the
broadcaster, and stored until needed
for transmission.
Subtitle
transmission
is
an
automated process. The equipment
interfaces with station planning and
automation systems, enabling it to
receive programming and trigger
information. The transmission units
then synchronise the subtitles for
playout, using the video playout
timecode. Subtitles are output in
suitable formats for the transmission
platform.
Transcoding
Transcoding of subtitles is the
process of reading subtitle data from
a signal or data stream, and converting
those subtitles on the fly, to one or
more transmission format. In layman's
terms, what comes in goes out.
In Asia we see a growing need for
DVB in and DVB out, both as is or with
a short delay for censoring.
Scaling from SD to HD DVB subtitles
or vice-versa can take place.
The Cavena transcode solution is
modular and flexible. Capacity is
dependent on the input format being
an SDI signal or IP, and the number of
languages to be transcoded.
The start module is a 1RU solution,
based on an HP server, and is shipped
pre-configured and ready to go on air.
The Cavena transcode solution
can be standalone or automation
controlled.
It can also be upgraded to cater for

file-based playout, or a combination of
transcode- and file-based playout.
Trends in Subtitling
Subtitling gives viewers the option
of choosing from more and more
languages, anytime, anywhere.
Cavena assists a growing number of
customers in transcoding, for example,
DVB or teletext input and DVB output.
By recording subtitles, temporary
storage is also possible.
This allows the material to be
edited and censored, before being
retransmitted.
The company also assists with
OTT solutions, integrating with both
streaming vendors and standalone
solutions.
