//DBIA EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN SURVEY DBIA Excellence in Design Survey: The Results Are In! DBIA LAUNCHED a dedicated Excellence in Design Survey last fall to take the pulse of the A/E/C industry on the role of design-build in achieving excellence in design. The questions served to uncover perceived challenges to design excellence through the design-build delivery method. With more than 300 responses from industry professionals, the results are in! "Through the excellence in design survey, DBIA sought to receive input from our major constituencies, consisting of owners, designers, engineers and contractors, to formulate best-practice materials that will be used to educate our diverse communities and advance design excellence through the design-build project delivery method," says Praful Kulkarni, president and CEO of gkkworks and chair of DBIA's Design Advisory Council. Fifty-four percent of respondents selected design-build as the preferred method to achieve design excellence. Clearly defined design quality expectations by the owner was identified as the most important requirement for achieving high-quality design. The second most important requirement was having a well-defined executive team selection process. One-third of respondents were contractors, and another third were architects. Another 18 percent were owners, and 15 percent were engineers. Nearly half of survey respondents agreed that excellence in design can be defined as, "Designed to achieve owner's performance objectives; timeless contribution to the community it inhabits; sustainable construction technology and performance; adaptable to future, unanticipated uses; and materials and systems appropriate to the anticipated life cycle for each." Challenges to achieving design excellence through the design-build delivery method include the contractor's need to conform to cost and schedule. Respondents identified this as somewhat of a challenge at 44 percent and very much of a challenge at 36 percent. Overall, 85 percent reported that achieving design excellence using design-build is possible in their organizations. The 10-question online survey was developed by members of DBIA's Design Advisory Council, which is comprised of senior leaders from top architectural and engineering firms across the country. Through its leadership position, DBIA plans to use the results of the design excellence survey to create best-practice materials to share with the industry later in the year.
