LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS// LW: My focus will be on renewed efforts to collaborate with the industry as we embark on our DBIA Design-Build Best Practices initiative. Organizations such as Associated General Contractors of America, American Institute of Architects, Construction Owners Association of America, American Council of Engineering Companies and American Water Works Association-just to name a few-are key collaborators who play a critical role in helping us define Design-Build Done Right. Each brings a unique perspective, and DBIA clearly sees the relevance and importance of each point of view. There is much work to be done to advance the industry, and we will be much better positioned to affect positive change if we open the lines of communication and take advantage of working together on common ground. their enhanced role in design-build project delivery. Design-build is not just a smarter business transaction; it is a better opportunity for the project participants to operate at a higher level of performance, especially architects and engineers. LW: In addition to further engaging and providing value for the design community, expanded owner awareness and education on design-build is critical. If DBIA can succeed in expanding our reach to owners to make them aware of design-build as a viable "tool in the toolbox," and then provide the resources to help owners develop appropriate acquisition strategies, this value quickly transitions to the practitioner segment of the DBIA membership. Where would you like to see DBIA by the end of 2014? In five years? JW: In my day job, I am an architect. In the middle of my career, I spent a 13-year tour in the construction business in various executive roles, and I learned a lot! Through leadership at DBIA, I want to lead my fellow architects to be proactive, confident, business-savvy participants in designbuild projects. I want to demonstrate how design professionals can be true business partners in the project delivery process. As one might say, "go where the action is" in the deal. LW: As executive director, my role centers on running an organization of people who do some of the most important and interesting work I've ever seen. I've learned so much theory over the years and had the chance for a dose of practical application in 2011 when we built out the DBIA headquarters (using design-build delivery, of course). My church is embarking on a $6 million construction project. My personal goal this year is to take the theory and abundance of information produced by DBIA and our members to manage the procurement process and lead the group to a successful project outcome. JW: DBIA has been on a consistent growth path since its inception 20 years ago. At the end of 2014, I would like to see DBIA increasingly recognized as the only authoritative industry advocate for Design-Build Done Right. In five years, I imagine a DBIA with an even larger portfolio of educational products and services offered across the country, an increasingly diversified membership base and a worldwide reputation as the gold standard for all things design-build. LW: By the end of 2014, I would like to see DBIA universally recognized as the "only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build project delivery." In five years, I would like to see design-build certification rise to the level of a minimum requirement-either through legislation or owner selection-for firms seeking to win design-build proposals. In other words, in five years I'd like to see the number of credential holders triple at a minimum and owners asking for a certified professional as a rule rather than the exception. What are your personal leadership goals this year? What new areas do you plan to explore to enhance member value? JW: Design-build is a hyphenated name for a reason. Again, our design professionals have to be on board. DBIA must continue to present a real value proposition to the design community-architects and engineers-so that they truly understand 6 winter//2014 L IS A WA SHINGTON IS A CER T IF IED A S S OCI AT ION E X ECU TI V E (CA E) W ITH MORE TH A N 15 Y E A RS OF ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT E XPERIENCE.
