By todd rich the soLDIer fAMILy Care Center (SFCC) at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo., was built to provide comprehensive healthcare services for soldiers—wounded and not—and their families and dependents. The facility needed to accommodate a full range of medical specialties: orthopedic, podiatry, chiropractic, occupational and physical therapy and dental care. The building also needed to offer a supportive, calming environment to aid in the healing process, as well as a low impact on the environment. As if these goals weren’t enough to make for a complicated design-build project, the SFCC wasn’t built in a bubble. Connecting to the existing Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH), the facilit y had to prevent any disruption to inpatient care throughout construction. And as an active military installation, the SFCC would have to be built to current Antiterrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) standards.
