healThcare//sTaTe of The secTor Kiewit team went to great lengths to meet this challenge, tracking down the supplier of the brick veneer used on EACH in 1986 and purchasing the same material for SFCC’s façade. The interior aesthetics of the two buildings are also congruous, down to the circulation areas and signage. While maintaining the aesthetics of the older building, the SFCC uses modern materials selected for durability and easy maintenance. In addition, its color scheme is designed to reflect the landscape outside and offer patients a soothing, peaceful environment that contributes to health and healing. Building the SFCC meant taking over an area previously used for 790 of EACH’s parking spaces, leading to more congestion than anticipated. At USACE’s request, the Kiewit team modified construction phasing to add a 1,300-space surface lot to offer access to EACH from major roads, as well as stormwater collection and treatment capabilities. Again, the team worked together and with the EACH staff to make this a reality. Teamwork and Technology Teamwork was the driving force behind the success of the project, with an assist from technology. USACE was involved at every step, meaning any issues could be addressed and solved before they could impact scheduling or costs. The design-build team colocated at the site during the preconstruction and early design phases of the project, increasing efficiency and cutting travel costs. W hile many of the team members had worked together before, the constant interact ion—face-to-face or by v ideo conference—kept everyone on the same track. The continual contact fostered efficient processes and procedures and helped team members spark each other’s creativity. In this collaborative environment, the whole was truly greater than the sum of its parts. Building information modeling (BIM) supported the teamwork, allowing the design-build team to identify virtual clashes and constructability issues before they manifested onsite. BIM also made it possible to integrate the existing emergency generators and maximize off-site prefabrication. In addition, USACE staffers could visualize the project before it was built, / snapshoT project name: Soldier Family Care Center, Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo. owner: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers design-Builder and general contractor: Kiewit Building Group, Inc. architect and engineer: Leo A Daly major subcontractors/subconsultants: RK Mechanical Ludvik Electric Schuff Steel Co. Using recycled and energy-efficient materials and systems, landscaping and plumbing fixtures that reduce water consumption and a range of other eco-friendly innovations, the facility achieved LEED® Silver certification. The project won the 2010 Colorado Association of General Contractors Award of Construction Excellence in the Design-Build Category. In 2011, it won a National Design-Build Award in the Healthcare Facilities category from DBIA. There was some schedule and budget “creep” due to about 135 modifications requested by the USACE that expanded the project’s scope. However, no litigation was associated with the project and, in more than two years, it didn’t produce a single lost-time incident. The end result satisfied the USACE and—just as importantly—will satisfy the thousands who receive healthcare at the SFCC.
