By todd rich IN A pArk-LIke setting on the west side of the Pentagon lies a memorial to those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Marking the path to the crash site of American Airlines Flight 77, the Pentagon Memorial offers a remembrance of the victims while providing visitors with a place for quiet contemplation. Each of the 184 people who perished in the crash is commemorated with a Memorial Unit that bears his or her name. The units feature a stainless-steel-and-granite bench that arcs upward over a rectangular reflecting pool as though it were growing out of the ground. The pools are lighted from underneath the benches at night—the only lighting in the memorial. The Memorial Units are arranged in lines by age of the victims, from youngest (three-year-old Dana Falkenberg) to oldest (John D. Yamnicky Sr., 71). Visitors can sit on the benches, leave flowers and other tokens or sit along a boundary wall landscaped with tall grasses to view the memorial in its entirety. Whatever the perspective, the memorial is stirring. It was a project that required a sensitive yet creative approach. A coLLABorAtIve coNcept The Pentagon Memorial’s concept was formulated by KBAS, LLC, and chosen from 1,126 submissions.
