a Message froM the Chief exeCutiVe offiCer New members of all kinds flocked to GAMA International during fiscal year 2012 as your association continued to diversify and expand its membership base all over the world. Whether old or new, male or female, American or international, GAMA members all focus on the same goal: building profitable face-to-face distribution organizations. GAMA membership’s growth and increasing diversity in 2012 continue a trend: In 2010 and 2011, we welcomed 1,778 new members and then drew another 1,079 by June 2012. Here are GAMA’s fastest-growing membership segments: n Female. This past year, State Farm Insurance Companies’ Thomasina Skipper, M.B.A., CLU ChFC CLF, led the new GAMA Women in Leadership Task Force to further increase female membership (now 16 percent of GAMA) and programming. The task force is also pushing to expand female participation in membership development, in committee work, and even on GAMA’s board. One early achievement: the insightful and well-attended Women of GAMA Leadership Session and Networking Reception at LAMP ’12. And LAMP ’13 will be headed by Waddell & Reed’s Daralee Barbera, CFP CLF CMFC, who in 2014 will become GAMA’s second female president. generation. Launched in 2007 as one of GAMA’s strategic initiatives, LoTT (Leaders of Today and Tomorrow) has grown its membership by 431 percent and today enjoys a robust count of 706. To better serve these younger, less experienced members who hold the future of the financial services industry in their hands, GAMA this year revved up its social networking on Facebook and Twitter. Also in 2012, GAMA debuted the six-month, seven-module Leading From the Front program, aimed at developing young leaders (see pages 5 and 9). GAMA has dramatically increased its efforts to draw new international members and build company partnerships by demonstrating the transferability of our bestpractices creed and by emphasizing the relevance of our industry-leading recognition program. International field leaders now represent 40 percent of GAMA membership, up from less than 2 percent in 1990. And this year, GAMA created the International Business Development Task Force, headed by former GAMA president John Baier, M.S.F.S., CLU ChFC CFP CLF, to help expand the association’s presence abroad. n ext N n International. GAMA is serving the changing market by creating task forces on key growth areas, developing new programs for members, and simply staying ahead of the game. GAMA’s increasing member diversity is clearly its greatest asset in ensuring its future sustainability. Sincerely, Jeffrey R.
