THE YEAR IN REVIEW Happy birthday, GAMA! This fiscal year marks the association’s 60th anniversary. Since 1952, GAMA International has relentlessly pushed year after year to provide its members with the best possible development products and services and networking opportunities while adapting to a changing industry and client base. And 2012 was no exception. Never accepting the status quo, GAMA explored critical industry frontiers, whether technological, market related, or membership oriented. In the great promised land of new media, for instance, the GAMA International group on LinkedIn saw a steady increase in traffic during the past year. This group provides an avenue for sharing industry-related ideas and seeking advice from fellow GAMA members (upcoming features include industry icon Conk Buckley’s “Coaching Corner”). In addition, GAMA text messaging debuted at LAMP ’12 to the particular delight of tech-savvy LoTTers. Leading From the Front: Important Development One strategic development area GAMA moved into this past year was that of the experienced frontline leader. GAMA already had the GAMA Foundation’s Elements of Leadership for the brand-new frontline manager and GAMA International’s Te Essentials of Leadership and Management for first-line leaders, but there was a gap. It’s now been filled with Leading From the Front, a blended-learning program made up of seven modules. Custom-made for managers ready to start shifting their modus operandi from the tactical to the strategic, the highly interactive Leading mixes on-site classrooms, virtual classrooms, self-directed learning, and regular coaching. It’s being offered in openenrollment and company-specific formats (read more on page 9). Both formats feature a 12-month business plan, a coaching model, and a leadership competency assessment, and end with a capstone session on the Civil War battlefields of Gettysburg, Pa., where participants get a true feel for the long-term impact of leadership decisions. Diversity: The Final Frontier Having female members is of course not new territory for GAMA, but dramatically expanding this group to its full potential certainly is. Tis year marked a turning point in the association’s commitment to female members and clients. GAMA launched the Women in Leadership Task Force, the “brainchild” of GAMA 2011– 12 president Kenneth G.
