New York City Connected Vehicle Pilot Project Update
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is
currently in the design stage of its ground-breaking Connected
Vehicle Pilot project. The project will implement multiple connected
vehicle safety-related applications in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, consistent with the city's focus and dedication of resources to
achieve its Vision Zero goal of reducing traffic-related injuries and
fatalities to zero. The project will also improve mobility and travel
time reliability and reduce the environmental impact of vehicle traffic. The project will be the largest deployment of connected vehicles
in the United States. It will install hardware devices and high-speed
radios in 8,000 vehicles, including 5,850 taxis that operate mostly in
lower Manhattan, 1,250 buses operated by Metropolitan Transportation Authority, 250 sanitation vehicles operated by the New York
City Department of Sanitation, 250 NYCDOT fleet vehicles, and
400 United Parcel Service (UPS) delivery trucks. Similar capability
will be provided via smartphone applications for 100 pedestrians
and bicyclists. In addition, more than 350 intersections in Manhattan and Brooklyn will be equipped with roadside units that will
broadcast warning messages to equipped vehicles. These devices and

radios will enable ultra-fast vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication of safety and mobility related messages
such as warnings for sudden braking ahead, red-light violations,
speed violations, and vehicles turning in front of buses. Learn more

Transport for London Completes Largest Ever Test
of New Signaling System
Transport for London (TfL) has completed its biggest test to date of
its brand new signaling system on the London Underground "Tube"
transit system. Engineers have tested trains on a new computer-based signaling and controls system in the first section to go live
with the new system in 2018. The system will allow trains to run
closer together, meaning a more frequent service. TfL says that when
the upgrade is complete it will bring a more frequent and reliable
service to 40 percent of the Tube network, allowing the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines to carry 17,500 more customers each
hour. The upgrade will also see the District Line accommodate
10,000 more passengers each hour and the Metropolitan line is
expected to increase its capacity by 9,000 passengers an hour. itej

New System Uses Drones to Monitor Railroads
SigmaRail, a company supported by the Universidad Carlos III
Science Park, has created a system that uses drones and a new
computer program to make automatic inspections of railroads. This
innovation, which geolocates possible incidents on rail corridors,
makes it possible to reduce costs and increase the train safety. The
goal of this new development is to be able to recognize the good condition of train track elements in images taken by drones. The drones
fly over the railroad corridor by means of new image recognition
software created by SigmaRail in collaboration with the research
group at the UC3M Intelligent Systems Laboratory.
SigmaRail participates in the ESA BIC Autonomous Region of
Madrid-UC3M Node program, a company incubator project of the
European Space Agency managed in Madrid by the Real Madrid
Foundation with the support of the regional government. Its objective is to facilitate incentives for business projects and startups that
use space technologies or develop applications based on the same to
create new products and services.

Eberle Design Inc.'s iCITE® Data Aggregator
DA-300® Offers Real-Time Traffic & Arterial Data
with Cabinet Monitoring
From the Intelligent Cabinet Interface to Traffic Equipment (iCITE®)
suite of products, the iCITE® Data Aggregator DA-300® accesses realtime intersection and arterial traffic data from any traffic cabinet, via
high-speed internal or external communications devices, regardless
of the traffic controller or central ITS system. These devices are also
designed to endure temperature extremes and are well suited for
solar powered applications. In cooperation with any iCITE Ready™
data analytics partner, the DA-300® can provide turning movement
counts, amber/red actuations, arrivals on red, detector failures,
preemption details, communications and power failures/alerts, split
and interval timing data, travel time and the Purdue Coordination
Diagram, based upon Hi Resolution Data, all tailored to provide
Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures via a Cloud-based
user-friendly interface. Wi-Fi equipped and travel time ready. For
