The ABCs of Communication in Transportation:
ITE's Inaugural Online Workshop
powered by Shelley Row
Good communication skills are an
essential part of being successful
and advancing your career. Yet
we've all been frustrated when our
bosses, staff, clients, constituents,
and other stakeholders don't seem to
understand. We see others succeed
in communicating effectively and
effortlessly and wonder how they do it.
You are not alone. From a recent
survey, the development of
communication skills has been
recognized by ITE members as a
significant need. To close this gap, ITE has partnered with Shelley
Row, P.E., PTOE to provide its first-ever intensive, interactive online
3-part workshop. This inaugural workshop is the practical solution
transportation professionals are looking for to build confidence in all
facets of communication-writing, listening, and speaking-in order
to achieve their goals.

ITE members receive registration discounts.

Session 1: Why Didn't They
Read My Email? Writing
Emails, Briefings and More
that are Understood, and Get
Responses
Have you ever sent a detailed email about
your important roadway project and realized
that no one read it? Have you developed
briefing papers that requested input and
none came? What's going on? In this webinar,
we'll examine real-life examples of emails,
briefings and other correspondence from
transportation projects. You'll have the
opportunity to send in sample emails and
find ways to make them more effective.
Learning Objectives:
*
Learn how to get to the point so that
readers know what you expect of them;
*
Format an email or letter to make it easyto-understand and act on; and
*
Increase the impact of your written and
emailed communication;

As part of the workshop, participants will:
*
Learn how to write effective emails and other written
communication pieces;
*
Practice and develop proficiency in listening to stakeholders;
*
Create and deliver powerful and persuasive presentations; and
*
Gain the ability to make a positive impact on and influence
your audience
What Makes this Online Workshop Different?
*
Using her expertise in transportation, Shelley Row has tailored each
session within this online workshop to meet the specific needs of the
transportation professional.
*
Unlike in-classroom instruction, this workshop is online, meaning we
come to you. There is no travel necessary.
*
Email reminders and bite-sized videos in the ITE Learning Hub help
you apply what you've learned and stay on track.
*
Participants can provide real-life examples and receive feedback from
the instructor.
Who Should Attend?
Transportation professionals who must communicate with others orally or
in writing and for whom, good communication skills are essential for success.

Session 2: It's Not Just About
the Data: Use Brain-Science to
Get Your Points Across and be
Memorable
You've done the analysis. You have the
traffic projections, the crash statistics,
the proposed alignments and yet you
can't seem to get people to understand
or remember the key points. What can
you do? The secrets are in brain-science.
The key to being memorable is making a
connection with the client, staff, or boss.
Learning Objectives:
*
Learn the power of listening first to them
so that they will listen to you;
*
Find out how to calm agitated citizens,
clients or politicians so that they have the
brain power to hear your key points; and
*
Understand how stories communicate
your point in a way that sticks in the
brain.

Session 3: Stop Death by
PowerPoint! Create Impactful,
Brain-Friendly Presentations
Your research results or the project options
are described by graphs, charts and words
(lots of words). They fill the PowerPoint
slides. The analysis is complicated and
can't be simplified. Or can it? During this
webinar, learn techniques to effectively
design your presentation so that you
successfully communicate the project
without boring or aggravating your
audience or threatening the future of the
program. Plus, you can send in PowerPoint
slides that you struggle with and see them
transformed for enhanced understanding.
Learning Objectives:
*
Develop presentations that are designed
to connect with the audience;
*
Create slides that reduce cognitive load
so that the audience isn't exhausted; and
*
Design presentations with focal point
and visual images to enhance your
hard-core results.
