Year in Review

n 2019, ITE-a community of transportation professionals-continued the significant
transformation that has been building in recent years. A robustly attended Joint ITE
International and Texas District Annual Meeting and Exhibit (#ITEAustin2019) in
Austin, TX, USA; a surge in membership growth and student activity; an array of

technical offerings; development of programs to support the next generation of transportation

leaders; and countless other examples demonstrate how ITE has provided an experience like no
other for its members. At the same time, the transportation industry as a whole also continues to
transform itself with major developments (and some setbacks) that are changing and expanding
our transportation choices and influencing how the profession is moving forward.
This article reflects on the successes of the past year, and highlights
the changes and additions that are underway to better serve
our members and the industry. The celebration of ITE's 90th
anniversary in 2020 presents an opportunity to look back on where
we've been in order to guide where we're going. With the Joint
ITE International and Southern District Annual Meeting and
Exhibition (#ITENOLA2020), set for New Orleans, LA, USA in
August 2020 and a lineup of new resources, products, and services
from ITE, this next year we seek to build on the success of 2019 and
continue the momentum that has been established.
Membership Growth. Beginning in 2016, the year over year
growth of ITE membership has been steadily increasing from
14,228 in 2016 to a projection of more than 16,000 by the end
of 2019, based on current trends. In 2019 we added a number of
individual members through our Section Affiliate Campaign. In
addition, we continue to grow the number of student members
around the world, especially in Australia and India that have seen
new student chapters in 2019, and we continue to have very high
retention rates of current members.
ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit. The Joint ITE International
and Texas District Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Austin, TX, July
21-24, 2019 was the largest in more than 15 years with more than
1,500 professionals in attendance. Attendees routinely travel not only

Members of the 2019 ITE International Board of Direction.
from the local area but from across North America and as far away
as Australia and New Zealand. The conference was an opportunity
to highlight the leading trends in our profession, showcase the work
of ITE members, convene ITE's technical councils and committees,
and engage with the next generation of transportation professionals. At the presentation of the 2019 ITE Awards, the newest ITE
Honorary Member, Kenneth H. Voigt, P.E. (H) was recognized.
Student participation was highlighted throughout the meeting,
including in the 10th Annual Collegiate Traffic Bowl Tournament,
which saw the home team of the University of Texas at Austin
