ITE Journal – December 2019 - 26

Plans for 2020
The next year holds much excitement for ITE as the stage is set for the
90th anniversary celebration, ONE ITE developments, the Annual
Meeting in the Big Easy, and so much more. The theme of the Annual
Meeting, Celebrating the Past-Shaping the Future, will serve as
a guide for the resources, products, and services ITE offers to its
members and the profession as a whole over the coming year.
Annual Meeting and 90th Anniversary Celebration. Since its
founding in 1930, ITE has established itself as an industry leader in
the transportation profession. To commemorate this milestone, ITE is
planning a number of celebratory activities and resources, including
through ITE Journal and at the Joint ITE International and Southern
District Annual Meeting and Exhibition in New Orleans, LA, August
9-12, 2020. Attendees will recognize artifacts, historical photos, and
presentations of ITE's history throughout the conference, and District,
Section, and Chapter leaders will be encouraged to emphasize their
own history in various ways for presentation at the meeting.
Throughout 2020, ITE Journal will highlight individual Districts
each month, focusing on the history and successes of each group,
as well as interview the District Administrators who help "keep the
keys" of the District's past and present. Profiles of individuals who
were influential in ITE's history will be presented throughout the year.
ITE Journal will also feature a timeline on the history of ITE since
1930, and present the traffic technologies, key players, and events that
inspired and transformed the industry throughout the decades.
Through the renewal process, ITE members have been asked to
consider donating $90 in celebration of ITE's 90th year to support
the ITE Legacy Fund. The Legacy Fund helps support our Diversity
Scholars, the student led Student Leadership Summits, LeadershipITE scholarships, the STEM competition, and the Matson and
Hammond Mentoring Program.
In addition to celebrating the 90th anniversary, planning is
well underway for the annual meeting's technical sessions, keynote

speakers, and offerings for members and attendees. Familiar
favorites such as the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Championship and
NoCOE Transportation Technology Tournament can be expected.
And new in 2020, ITE is launching its first-ever Micro-Mobility
"Sandbox" Design Competition to be held in conjunction with the
conference, sponsored by the ITE Employer Councils: Industry,
Consultants, Public Agency, and Education. The goal of the
competition is to encourage both member companies and ITE
student chapters to take on the urban micro-mobility integration
challenge and propose potential solutions. See the ad on page 22
for additional information, and stay tuned throughout the coming
months for more on the competition.
As part of the next step in the continuing efforts to build value
and strengthen bonds with the exhibitors, ITE is adding a training/
product display area for the Annual Meeting in New Orleans. This
training/product display area is to provide an area for solution
providers to present live case studies in partnership with a public
agency to educate attendees on the how their product works in a
real-world setting.
ONE ITE. Under the ONE ITE initiative, in 2020 the Mountain,
MOVITE, and Florida Puerto Rico Districts will formally elevate
existing Chapters to Sections, and 16 new Sections are in the first
stages of formation. All existing Sections and remaining Chapters
will also be updating their charters and bylaws in 2020 using model
guidance developed by the IBOD. The goal is that by the end of
2020, ITE will have successfully re-chartered and put in place new
bylaws throughout all 88 of our Districts and Sections.
Technical Activities for 2020. The technical staff at ITE
headquarters continues to work with ITE members to develop
technical products and services in 2020, and several technical
publication releases are planned throughout the year. We are in
the final development stages for a supplement to the ITE Trip
Generation Manual, 10th Edition and expect a release in early 2020.
The Third Edition of the FHWA/FRA Highway-Rail Crossing
Handbook will be released by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Rail Administration (FRA). This
updated product was developed by ITE under contract to FHWA.
The Traffic Signal Benchmarking & State of the Practice report,
also prepared by ITE for FHWA, will be released by FHWA. The
report benchmarks traffic signal infrastructure and captures
organizational and workforce trends, technology implementation,
and current practices involved in traffic signal management,
operation, and maintenance.
ITE is also working with FHWA on curbside management
projects to expand on past work in this area, including the Curbside
Management Practitioners Guide and accompanying case studies.
This work will include a deeper focus on processes and tools to
inventory current curbspace uses and analyze optimal uses.
