down 244 billion cubic feet from the
4.000 Tcf in storage on Nov. 13, which
was 5.5 percent above the five-year
average. The Dec. 25 storage number
was 532 Bcf more than a year ago when
gas storage stood at 3.224 Tcf.
EIA unveiled new classifications for
natural gas storage on Nov. 13 (AOGR,
December 2015, pg. 16). The agency
says changes in regional trends in
natural gas consumption, production
and storage led it to recategorize its
storage regions. In large part, EIA says,
the former East Consuming region was
split into the new East and Midwest
regions, while the previous West
Consuming region was split into the
new Pacific and Mountain Regions. The
new South-Central Region consists
mainly of the states that comprised the
old Producing Region.
According to EIA, gas storage in the
new East region was 876 Bcf on Dec.
25, 10.7 percent above the five-year
average, but 58 Bcf less than Nov. 13,
when storage stood at 934 Bcf, 0.9
percent above the five-year average.
East Region gas storage on Dec. 25 was
109 Bcf more than a year ago.
Gas storage in the new Midwest
Region stood at 1.025 Tcf on Dec. 25,
12.9 percent above the five-year average
and 99 Bcf less than the 1.124 Tcf in
storage on Nov. 13, which was 3.0
percent above the five year average.
Dec. 25 gas storage in the Midwest
Region was 138 Bcf more than a year
ago.
In the new Mountain Region, EIA
says, gas storage was 195 Bcf on Dec.
25, which was 4.3 percent above the
five-year average and 19 Bcf less than
the 214 stored on Nov. 13, which was

0.5 percent above the five year average.
Gas storage in the Mountain Region
was up 32 Bcf from a year ago.
Gas storage in the new Pacific region
was 338 Bcf on Dec. 25, 8.0 percent
above the five-year average and 43 Bcf
less than the 381 Bcf stored on Nov. 13,
which was 6.4 percent above the fiveyear average. Pacific Region gas storage
on Dec. 25 was up 3 Bcf from a year

ago.
In the South-Central region, gas
storage levels on Dec. 25 were 1.322
Tcf, 19.3 percent above the five-year
average and down 25 Bcf from the
1.347 Tcf in storage on Nov. 13, which
was 11.8 percent above the five-year
average. The Dec. 25 gas storage level
for the South-Central Region was up
250 Bcf from a year ago. ❒
