real weddings Haley & Jon Rogers March 17, 2007 By Jenn Thorton • Photography by Justine Belson Photography T hanks to a fateful introduction by, at that time, a newly coupled pair looking to share their happiness with friends, Jon rogers met Haley Beth Zerr—an encounter that led to a more than five-year courtship en route to a Christmas engagement in 2005. “The ring was sparkly beautiful and came in a beautiful inlaid wood box,” remembers Haley, whose three-week backpacking trip to the British isles helped set the scene, or the theme, for the couple’s st. Patrick’s day nuptials: springtime in an english garden. True to form, the couple exchanged late-morning vows on March 17, 2007, at arden Hills Country Club in sacramento, motivated in part by the traditional irish Claddaugh rings they had both been wearing every day up until the wedding— bands symbolizing love, friendship and loyalty that Haley had found during her hop across the pond. on a beautiful day in mid-March, in the presence of 50 guests and an intimate wedding party that included only the bride’s maid of honor and the groom’s best man, Haley walked down the aisle toward Jon in the wedding courtyard at arden Hills while “Come to My garden” from The secret garden played in the background. The site perfectly complemented the couple’s theme. “it has a ‘gardenish’ feel to it that helped us to continue the feeling of spring and a garden,” says Haley. naturally, the presence of botanicals figured prominently into the affair, including Bells of ireland, an emerald green annual, and Monkey Tail, native to the Caribbean. The couple’s florist heeded nature’s calling when she suggested these floral decorations that the bride and groomed absolutely loved. in keeping with the irish beat, the couple chose an earthy palette of sage green, chocolate brown, and cream as the colors for their wedding, the details of which, while certainly elementally inspired, were anything but garden variety. in addition to penning their own vows, the bride donned a string of pearls that Jon had given her for the couple’s third anniversary, as well as pearl stud earrings—a graduation gift from a dearly departed friend. other festive touches included a scottish luckenbooth that served as cake topper (another symbol of love and fidelity); and the cake service was the same set used by Haley’s grandparents on their 50th wedding anniversary. during the reception, which was held in the east Terrace room at arden Hills, a mutual friend of the couple performed a Highland sword dance, and guests enjoyed a festive lunch that included a selection of corned beef at the request of the bride. after dining and dancing, the couple and their guests adjourned to an after-party at the Pine Cove Pub. it was the perfect ending to an intimate celebration, one perfectly suited to the informal and high-spirited couple. “we are both very loyal and true people,” Haley says. “we are also pretty casual and fun loving.
