MYPNOZ - THE NEW PILZ MODULAR SAFETY RELAY
BY BLAKE MARCHAND
Create your own safety, individual - tailor-made - easy!
Pilz Automation Safety Canada recently launched the innovative myPNOZ® safety relay
system, which consists of myPNOZ® safety relays and myPNOZ® Creator, a new Pilz platform
for customized modular safety relays. The solution is tailor-made to customer specification
and ideal for machines with two to six safety functions.
" From the customer standpoint, a supplier should offer the exact solution needed, not
more, not less. That's one of the fundamental ideas behind myPNOZ®, " explained Joao Paulo
Vaz, Machinery Safety Consultant & Training Advisor with Pilz Automation Safety Canada. " In
many cases, the designers have to buy more output modules or expansion contacts than
necessary, because of one or two additional outputs. Therefore, it can happen that your
system may have three or more inputs / outputs that are not used by the application. "
An electrical engineer, Vaz also has a post-graduate degree in occupational safety
engineering and is a Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE®), accredited by TÜV NORD,
as well as being a certified CMSE® instructor. He has been with Pilz since 2012, moving from
Brazil to Canada in 2018 with his family and joining Pilz Canada. He has been in the
automation industry since 2003. We also spoke with Pilz Canada CEO & General Manager,
Andreas Sobotta for more insight into the program. Sobotta has been with Pilz 5-years. His background is also technical, owning a Master of Physics.
With myPNOZ®, Vaz said, " Essentially, you have a modular, customizable solution with the highest performance level on the market. " Sobotta
clarified that the custom myPNOZ® safety relays, " can be used in the most dangerous applications whatsoever, " meaning that they are highly
reliable even for very hazardous machines. " Performance level and reliability are linked, " noted Vaz.
" On the lower end, the customer has the option to use single safety relays, which are readily available on the market. However, although they may
perform the same safety functions, a bigger effort is required in terms of wiring and setup. On the higher end, you have small safety controllers or
safety PLCs, which are flexible, but require programming and know-how. The sweet spot for myPNOZ® is for applications that have between two
and six safety functions, that's where it is ideal in regard to cost-effectiveness and simplicity. "
" A lot of the small safety controllers on the market offer features the customer doesn't need but end up paying for. The myPNOZ® system is
tailor-made to the application, " he added.
myPNOZ® has 13 different modules for various applications. The head module gives you power supply and the integrated global safety function,
e.g. Emergency stop; each head module can be linked up to a total of 8 safe I/O modules, which equates to 13 billion possible configurations.
In simple terms, Vaz emphasized the product's motto, " You create, we build, you install. "
With respect to the logistic process, Sobotta clarified, " With myPNOZ® Creator online platform, the customer selects the type of safety inputs and
outputs as well as the control zones (spans of control) that are needed for the application. It also allows the customer to play a simulation mode, in
