A SUSTAINABLE SIDE

It was important to the designer and her husband
that they be as energy and water efficient as possible on this project. Aside from specifying Energy
Star-rated appliances, WaterSense fixtures and
LED lighting, they also used a spray foam with
a combination of batt insulation throughout the
house, which makes a huge difference in their
heating bill.
They chose a low-VOC polyurethane coating
on the flooring, and the sun glass for the windows keeps out the heat and draws it in at different times of the year. They wrapped the house in
Blueskin and each door and window with Vycor
Plus for added protection against water and air
filtration. Ceiling fans move air in each room,
there is a water-detection system and programmable thermostats, and a water heater produces
hot water on demand.
Incorporating biophilia in their home was also
important to the designer, and she was able to
bring the outdoors inside with windows above the

kitchen cabinets that let in natural light all day. She chose natural materials
like quarter-sawn oak for the kitchen island and the hood, and she used
quartzite from Brazil for the countertops.
" Correct use of color, space, scale, pattern and texture is essential because
those are among the elements responsible for creating harmony between
you and your environment, " said Rose. " Nourishing home and work environments have been undeniably proven to contribute to one's happiness,
well-being and productivity. "
ITEMS ON THEIR WISH LIST

For the kitchen, the designer wanted it to be open and simple. She chose a
white satin finish for the cabinets, which include transom wall cabinets.The
brown hood and island provide just the right amount of contrast, and the
oversize pendants over the island create a subtle wow factor.
The mainly white master bath is all about less clutter and distraction, and
Rose chose maintenance-free porcelain for the floor-to-ceiling tile with
subtle vein movement. A large soaking tub made out of SculptureStone - a
mixture of ground natural minerals and resins - sits under a bright window,
and a towel warmer provides that extra sense of comfort and luxury.
" We were both so organized and had specific things we needed to accomplish, " said Rose. " We avoided unnecessary confusion and delays because we
each had our own roles. "


visual distractions. "
