author Amy Fine Collins
acknowledged Durif in her
book, Hair Style (Harper
Collins, 1995). "Before him,
I felt like I was wearing
someone else's hair on my
head," she wrote. "I trust him
so completely that I just sit in
the chair and let him do with
me as he pleases, a privilege
I accord no other man."
in those early days, including Fekkai, Alain Pinon, Odile
Gilbert, Serge Normant, Michel Aleman and Madeleine
Cofano. "There was so much talent in one place. That never
happened again. Bruno was doing up to 50 haircuts a day.
Sometimes I'd go to his office and tell him, 'Bruno, you have
three clients waiting,' and he'd say, 'Ah, when there's five,
come back and get me.'"
Sadly, Pittini died at the age of 50 in 1995, but his legacy
is intact. "He invented the French Technique, which is still
taught at the Carsten Institute in New York City today," says
Durif, who owns a namesake salon at the storied Carlyle
Hotel (all of his assistants are graduates of the Carsten
Institute).
So what exactly is the French Technique? "It's all
about the shape of the head. You want the shape to be
oval," says Durif. "It's about the head, not the face. You
have to put that head on a pedestal and turn it around
to make sure everything is harmonious. Doing a trendy
haircut on a beautiful young model is easy, but satisfying a
woman between 35 and 55 is the real challenge." Pittini's
technique actually allows the hairdresser to avoid fatigue
and save time. It's also diametrically opposed to the English
Technique, which is based on sectioning. "Think about how
the Brits cut hair," says Durif. "They start in the back and
get very close to the work. I'm not sure
they see the big picture that way."
Today Durif commands $300 for
a haircut, a price he says is not even
that steep in Manhattan for someone
of his caliber. "What you're paying for
is my skill and the fact that I'm not
experimenting," he says. "My clients
know that their haircut will grow out
beautifully." And let's face it, $300 is
a lot less than the cost of a Hermès bag.
