" We used a simple, rich, deep palette with a
crisp contrast and didn't overcomplicate the
room. Basically, warm white, teal and brass are
the entire palette. "
FUNCTIONAL & GREEN BATHROOM
The color choices from the kitchen appear
again in the home's two bathrooms. The flooring
in the children's bath is from the same line
but has a black background instead of white.
Farrow & Ball Mizzle paint was used on the
vanity, the same tile from the kitchen backsplash
lines the walls above the tub, and the
concrete countertop featured in the kitchen
also tops the vanity.
" We aimed for continuity, so the house would
not be too choppy looking, " said Harautuneian.
" This is especially important with mid-century
houses because they are inherently simple. "
This bathroom is compact, and the designer
improved the space by moving the tub to the back
wall and putting the toilet and vanity next to each
other - changes that created more floor space.
SPECIFYING SUNSHINE IN THE MAIN BATH
While the kitchen leans into cool greens, the
main bathroom is all about the warmth of yellow.
Harautuneian's first task was to reconfigure
the space, which is long and narrow. She
shortened it by creating a toilet room at one
end, closing off some of the length. At the other
end of the bathroom is the vibrant shower
fully covered in marigold tile.
" The only window is in the shower, " explained
the designer. " That is why we didn't do
a deep teal wall tile. We wanted brighter and
fresher because there was less natural light. "
But other aspects of the kitchen design were
carried into this bathroom - like the flooring,
which has the same white background, and
the concrete countertop. Although the tile is a
different color, it is the same type used in white
in the kitchen and children's bathroom.
To make the most of the narrow space allotted
between the shower and toilet room, Harautuneian
added two custom teak vanities with custom
seating between them - a perfect spot for the kids
to hang out while the parents are getting ready.
Although the colors in this home may be
bold, the palette in each space reflects either
cool or warm tones to keep it simple. The clients
were able to have the bold design they
wanted while honoring the true style of the
home. Harautuneian learned that a well-designed
space has wide appeal, even when it
caters to clients' unique tastes.
" That was good information for me to acquire, "
she said. " I haven't done many houses
we knew were going to be sold. The next homeowner
will be equally appreciative. "

